19,000~ Coins Stolen From Bitstamp

Represents ~$5M USD @ Current market rates. Bitstamp is currently closed for business. I personally have some money on the site and I'm not 100% confident I'll be getting it back.

 

Wow, you'd think the security of BTC sites would've been enhanced and sufficient enough to prevent hackings after the Mt. Gox hacking. I guess this means a further decrease in the price of BTC. Did you have many coins tied up on Bitstamp?

 

That's unfortunate, but it goes to show you can't trust keeping your bitcoins in the wallet of major exchanges. Unless they do something like have the equivalent of what they're holding in escrow by a third party, etc.

 

5 million USD...Shit me.... Just goes to show that the assumed security of a site may not be up to the standard that it is believed to be.

Did you have much money tied up?

Thats a major loss to their site. I'm interested to see the investigations that are sure to follow.

 

This is part of the reason why Bitcoin won't become a fully respected currency for years to come... and the main reason I don't invest in it. Sorry to hear you're caught up in this R2P.

 

I agree with DD here, this isn't the first case where BTC's were stolen by hackers. It's commonly frequent that hackers now try hacking BTC and reselling them straight away ( that's why I think BTC price has dropped ). I don't know in who can I trust now and by the way I had some BTC there but it was a small amount, still I'd like to see if that money will be returned or what.

 

It's so ironic because bitcoin was made to prevent third party issues. Now all you read about is third party issues. When will people learn to quit storing money in these online "banks" or "exchanges"... You'll just get burnt every time. Sure, use them, that's fine, but quit leaving money on them.

 

The reason I'm in love with my dutch btc exchanges, even if they are slightly more expensive.
No need to keep a balance.

 

Cryptos are more useful than people actually know what to do with, it's funny. The nature of the currency makes it safe, and people are putting themselves at increased vulnerability.

 

That's pretty scary how your BTC can just get stolen like that, its too soon to depend on BTC when its new like this

One of the reasons why its hard for many to follow into crytocurrency. Interesting to see where this news take us, right into the new year.

 

Shame. I just keep enough in my wallet that I know I can live with losing if a worse case scenario occurs. Interested in how with will play out for your situation.

That's so unlucky for the business and the people who keep their money, guess it's a big disadvantage of having virtual money.

 

Sorry for the lost r2, personally one of the reasons i dont invest in BTC, dont have much confidence in crypto currencey
