Other crypto's are going to be just about as volatile as Bitcoin and you have to remember that it is still in its early years. Although in the last year its use has been adopted by a lot more people, news about Mt. Gox bankrupcy, OKcoin faking trade volume, and Blockchain's outdated (not anymore) security features, really scare people who aren't fully educated about Bitcoin's properties. Don't invest more money than you can afford to lose and I'd say the longer you hold your coins the better, eventually you'll be able to buy anything and everything with them. Getting 3% off Amazon gift cards with Gyft is one of my favorite uses for them so far.
