    Which SSD to buy?

Thought I'd ask here, but what's a good SSD to buy? I'm going to be buying a Lenovo Y50 (recommend a better laptop if you want, but that's not why I'm here), and wanted to replace its HDD with a 256 GB SSD. I don't really know much about hard drives in general so thought you lot would probably help.

Sort of looking for cheaper SSD's or else I'd just go with the Samsung 850 one.

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah I was looking at this laptop too. It's a pretty appealing deal and good features. The Samsung 850 should do you well.

You can go with the 850 evo or the 850 pro, you wont notice much (if any) difference in speed. The difference is in the form of memory that is used. The Pro has a much longer lifespan than the Evo, but this is IMO irrelevant. The Evo is good for perhaps around ten years...and by ten years from now that drive will be irrelevant, as surely the Sata-3 port will have hopefully become a thing of the past and we will all have moved onto a different interface with more bandwidth capability. In essence, there is little to be gained by going with the PRO.

Nonetheless, there are many other good drives out there that can be had for much cheaper, and perform nearly as well. You can look to Intel, Crucial, Sandisk for other top-tier SSD's closely on par with Samsung, as well as many others for good drives at much better price points...so you don't have to give up as much space. Unfortunately the Y50 only has room for one drive...so you're screwed there. You could also look into other laptops that carry an extra mSATA or M.2 port, so you can keep a large capacity hard drive and use one of the "small form factor" SSD's that operate on those interfaces. My laptop supported this (MSi) so I went that route on mine with an mSATA SSD.

I'd always prefer Samsung Evo's over any other SSD's. Make sure you buy one which suites your PC.

Thanks for all the help guys.

This isn't going to be my main computer. This is mainly to take to school so I won't store a lot of things on it but I wanted the SSD just to have.

The Samsung EVO SSDs are considered untouchable to be honest. You really can't go wrong with them. The cheapest SSD will still out-perform the most expensive HDD.

Like everyone has said, you should look at getting a Samsung EVO.
