fuckin finals

I'm in the same boat. I have this final English paper that's due tomorrow in the morning that I'm no where near done with but I also have a final in a subject that I'm very close to failing at 11am. I need to get a 60 in it to pass, but it's very possible for that to not happen.

Edit: Hopefully I'll be able to finish the paper by 2:30, then I'll wake up at 8:30, do all the corrections my brother will send me for my essay by 9, and then study for the last two hours. My brain will be mush after the four and a half hour exam though.

Truman Doctrine - Containment policy to keep Soviet Union from expanding communist ideas during Cold War. Impelled the US to help any countries being threatened by Soviet Union with military might. Precedent of Presidential foreign policy and made US the global policeman - 1947

Strontium 90- An article with the study's initial findings was circulated to U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1961, and helped convince him to sign the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treatywith the United Kingdom and Soviet Union, ending the above-ground nuclear weapons testing that placed the greatest amounts of nuclear fallout into the atmosphere.[18]

Duck and cover - Personal protection against nuclear explosion

Elizabeth Bentley - American spy that spied on the Soviet Union. Turned in a lot of motherfuckers 1945

Alger Hiss - American lawyer, government official, author. Was involved with the United Nations as a U.S State Department and as a UN official. He turned out to be a spy for the Soviet Union and was tried and convicted of perjury

“Do you have no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Do you have no sense of decency?”

Civil Rights Act of 1964 - Landmark for civil rights. Outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Ended voting discrimination and segregation in schools, at the workplace, and at facilities that served the general public

Voting Rights Act of 1965 - It outlawed the discriminatory voting practices adopted in many southern states after the Civil War, including literacy tests as a prerequisite to voting

Malcolm X - African-American muslim minister and human rights activist. Leader for black rights

Betty Friedan - American writer, activist, and feminist. Leading figure in women’s movement in United States. Author of The Feminine Mystique which is credited in sparking the second movement of women’s rights. Elected the first president of National Organization of Women (NOW).

Women’s liberation movement - JO FREEMAN - The women's liberation movement was a type of feminism that began in the late 1960s and persisted throughout the 1970s. (Read more on this) After a few months of meeting, Freeman started the newsletter called Voice of the women’s liberation movement. This newsletter circulated across the country (and in a few foreign countries), and gave the women's liberation movement its name. Many of the women in the Westside group went on to start other feminist organizations, including the Chicago Women's Liberation Union. Within the year, women’s liberation groups sprang up all over America.[5]

Alcatraz proclamation - 1969-Group Indians of All Tribes (IAT) occupies Alcatraz. Treaty of Fort Laramie said that all abandoned or no longer used land taken from natives would be returned from whom it was acquired from. People of IAT went to Alcatraz and claimed it theirs by “right of discovery” and were escorted off by Coast Guard. They came back with more numbers and tried to buy it off the government at the price that the government bought if off the natives. Oakes delivered a proclamation stating the property was their through right of discovery.

Termination and relocation policy - 1945-1960The belief was that Native Americans would be better off if assimilated as individuals into mainstream American society. To that end, Congress proposed to end the special relationship between tribes and the federal government. The intention was to grant Native Americans all the rights and privileges of citizenship, and to reduce their dependence on a bureaucracy whose mismanagement had been documented.

Ho Chi Minh - 1945 Vietnamese Communist. Led the Viet Minh independence movement establishing communist ruled democratic republic of vietnam. Also defeated french union

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution - 1964- Vietnam attacks Matic (sp?) US warship leads to authorizing President Johnson to take any measures he believed were necessary to retaliate and to promote the maintenance of international peace and security in southeast Asia. Some doubt credibility of attack, perhaps used as an excuse to authorize incredible power to President Johnson. No US soldiers died. Vietnamese did, apparently 6

“credibility gap” - 1960s and 1970s. At the time, it was most frequently used to describe public skepticism about the Lyndon B. Johnson administration's statements and policies on the Vietnam War.[1]
It was used in journalism as a euphemism for recognised lies told to the public by politicians. Today, it is used more generally to describe almost any "gap" between the alleged reality of a situation and what politicians and government agencies say about it.

Vietnam Veterans against the War 1967-Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW) is a tax-exempt non-profit organization and corporation, originally created to oppose US policy and participation in the Vietnam War. VVAW describes itself as a national veterans' organization that campaigns for peace, justice, and the rights of all United States military veterans.

Watergate break-in - Led to Nixon’s resignation. Wanted to spy on the Democrats election campaign plans in order to get Nixon re-elected-The scandal led to the discovery of multiple abuses of power by the Nixon administration, articles of impeachment,[2] and the resignation of Richard Nixon, the President of the United States, on August 9, 1974—the only resignation of a U.S. President to date. The scandal also resulted in the indictment of 69 people, with trials or pleas resulting in 48 being found guilty and incarcerated, many of whom were Nixon's top administration officials.[3]

Smoking gun tape - This is the transcript of the recording of a meeting between President Nixon and H.R. Haldeman in the Oval Office on June 23, 1972-The tape that basically ruined Nixon - confessed guilt. He lost all support after the smoking gun tape was released

GI Bill - 1944- right after WW2 - a law that provided a range of benefits for returning World War II veterans (commonly referred to as G.I.s). Benefits included low-cost mortgages, low-interest loans to start a business, cash payments of tuition and living expenses to attend university, high school or vocational education, as well as one year of unemployment compensation. It was available to every veteran who had been on active duty during the war years for at least ninety days and had not been dishonorably discharged; combat was not required

The Great Society - The main goal was the elimination of poverty and racial injustice. Federal funds were provided for special education schemes in slum areas, including help in paying for books and transport, while financial aid was also provided for slum clearances and rebuilding city areas. In addition, the Appalachian Regional Development Act of 1965 created jobs in one of the most impoverished regions of the country. The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 provided various schemes in which young people from poor homes could receive job training and higher education.

George Wallace- He is remembered for his Southern populist and[4] segregationist attitudes during the mid-20th century period of the African-American civil rights movement and activism, which gained passage of federal civil rights legislation in the mid-1960s to enforce constitutional rights for all citizens. He eventually renounced segregationist but remained a populist.

ACT UP - AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP) is an international direct action advocacy group working to impact the lives of people with AIDS (PWAs) and the AIDS pandemic to bring about legislation, medical research and treatment and policies to ultimately bring an end to the disease by mitigating loss of health and lives

Clinton impeachment - Bill Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States, was impeached by the House of Representatives on two charges, one of perjury and one of obstruction of justice. Acquitted of both charges

Questions to help you study (NOT the exact questions for the exam):

How did the federal government expand its power from 1865 to the present? What were some of the major events that prompted this expansion?

1933-1937 New deal = fix economy

-wagner act - organize as unions, bargain for better pay and conditions, strike
-section 7a - fair competition, guaranteed trade union rights, regulated working standards, regulated price of certain products
-Works Progress Administration (ccc) - employed hella people to work by doing improving public infrastructure, roads, parks, etc. by doing this, many people had employed, and stimulated the economy.
-Agriculture Adjustment Act - paid farmers to NOT plant, or to kill off excess livestock. raised prices of crops/livestock
-social security act - helped unemployed and elderly. government was reaching out to other generations (not just current one). New Deal act that is still going on. Paid retired people by imposing a regressive tax on working people. regressive tax = same tax for everybody, not a %
-japanese internment = expanding power over racial issues + pearl harbor + distrust of japanese?
-progressive era -> 16th amendment which imposed taxes on high income
-if you’re not for america you’re against it-little rock-big federal power move

One of the most important trends in post-World War II America has been the decline of citizens’ trust in the federal government. Why did this decline occur?
credibility gap -> gulf of tonkin based on a lie - a lot of what was going on in vietnam was exaggerated to get approval
public found out that the government was doing illegal things
Nixon & watergate
iron-caontra?selling iran arms when they were under arms embargo scandal during regains administration
church committee

How has the politics of fear shaped U.S. history since 1865?
First paragraph: Nativism & New immigrants -> immigration laws. Factory owners always had their hand in politics because of $$$. corruption

Second paragraph: Pearl habor led to jap internment during WW2. Executive order of 90166

Third paragraph: scared of communism, led to truman doctrine and cold war which led to all this ->>>> propaganda (duck and cover), Communism, Soviet Union, Red Scare (scared Soviet Union will bomb us),

Why do historians sometimes refer to the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s as the “second Reconstruction”?
first reconstruction: ending of civil war and slavery in the south. 15th amendment giving “voting” rights of blacks

second reconstruction: civil rights movement:finally got rights promised 100 years before. civil rights act of 1964 (equality to all sex/race/color/ended segregation) & voting rights act of 1965 eliminated things like understanding tests

How did federal policy on voting rights and civil rights change from 1865 to 1965? Consider policy on African American rights and women’s rights in your answer.
Civil rights movement- rosie the riveter
second ku klux klan
14th and 15th amendment
literacy tests-didnt gain full rights until 100 year later
civil rights movement made it equal voting rights
alice paul
jane addams
margaret
19th amendment gave women rights to vote

outline:
intro

par1: got voting rights -14th and 15th amendment and understanding test

par2: civil rights movement:finally got rights promised 100 years before. civil rights act of 1964 (equality to all sex/race/color/ended segregation) & voting rights act of 1965 eliminated things like understanding tests

par3: women jane adams and margaret sanger and alice paul and there fight

how I'd personally approach the essay specified, is to talk mainly about the majority 'hard power' system in place within US foreign policy at the time, with the idea of containment over use of threat. How this was achieved successfully, and how you can shove it up your butt fagg0t
