I've recently been growing more and more interested in expressing myself creatively through graphic design and art. I like to draw and sketch on paper, I love writing and creating word art/text designs, etc... so basically my question is where do I start?

I read the stickies and I've downloaded the appropriate graphical imaging resources like Photoshop and GIMP, but my question pertains more to what styles of art do you think would suit my interests well? Obviously word art and text design are a very basic jumping-off-point, so to speak, but as it turns out there are wayyyy too many different styles of graphics to wrap my head around immediately. This is where I turn to the experts for assistance. What kind of things should I practice that will help my understanding of composition and give me a solid foundation?

if you like doing word art/text designs try doing some signatures, mess around in photoshop and get muscle memory of where everything is, and then look up youtube videos and learn

Typography, vector art, and digital artwork may suit your interests.

Honestly, if you're going to learn graphics, I suggest trying to learn everything instead of just focusing on one type of style.

Shit how did I not instantly think of doing signatures? Good call.

Thanks for the suggestions, amigo. In the long run I do plan on learning how to do everything but I think building a strong foundation in a few specific areas is going to be a solid start.

I think that whatever you choose, you will face the reality to learn everything on photoshop. Its just better if you know everything because you can create without using the same exact tools each time. Theres an infinite possibilites. I would HIGHLY reccommend that you start to learn photoshop beside gimp.. If you want to do graphics longterm, theres a limit to gimp and when you will switch to ps, you will have difficulties.

Typography and other vector illustrations might not be a bad idea for you, however I do recommend you to download adobe illustrator for that.

Yeah I honestly figured as much. I'll try to focus mostly on PS.

I knew there was something I was forgetting - Adobe Illustrator. Thanks for the suggestions as well.
