Ezreal Smudge

I don't smudge very often, this is probably my second smudge tag.

Thoughts? CnC is appreciated.

 

I'm not very into grpahics, but in my opinion it looks pretty classy. Good job

 

Very messy smudging. Dull colors. Bad lighting. Poor composition.

My suggestion is to first learn basic composition, then lighting, then focus on smudging and other styles. Composition and lighting makes or breaks a tag.

Maybe this was more of what Nero was talking about, I made this as an example for you to get you a better idea lighting and composition.



I'm not the best smudger in the world, but you notice how it moves in the direction he's pointing, that's the flow. The composition, because there's no real clear definition of this around, is pretty much where you put your render, and how well the background fits into the render. I zoomed up the render a little bit so that way I could leave out the unnecessary parts, like the pants, and concentrate on the hand that's directing the flow of the composition. Also, never put your subject smack dab in the middle of your canvas if you can help it, as it makes the composition look very boring, as my art professor claims. Lighting can be improved because, as in the example, I added in a subtle soft light behind Ezreal to match the slight highlights on his jaw bone and at the edges of the headphones, and light rays in front to make an emphasis on the light in front. I added in some dust particles in randomly too to add a bit more realism to the lighting.

The lighting is bad on this one as well. The composition is more solid but still leaves something to be desired, but the smudge is good. A smudge tag shouldn't just be an image pasted over a smudged background though. You have to use the smudges to build depth and flow and to solidify the piece in a 3D space. Make sure to stay aware of all of the power points and make sure there is something interesting going on there that leads back to the focal. For lighting always look for focal lighting cues and never just soft brush lighting on and call it. Lighting on a image should give you a hint of what your light source is. Not all light is white and that is another important note. Light diffuses differently through different atmospheric conditions. My suggestion is to take a good stock photo and use a filter to turn it black and white. Learn how light effects value, then take off the filter and learn how value, light, and color play together to change tones. This will give you a good idea of how to paint natural lighting for your image, because while you're mostly manipulating images there will almost always be a bit of painting in a piece.

Perfect way to put this, it seems a little lacking. Maybe sharpen up some edges a bit and add some textures?

 

The colors dont really blend well, along with the smudges. Besides that its look ok. Also the background looks like you just shoved a grey color and smudged it. Nice effort though
