New Super Smash Bros / General Smash Thread

How many of you already have the game? How many of you are planning on getting it once it comes out on the Wii U? Who are your favorite characters? What're your thoughts on how this edition of Smash is?

I LOVE the Smash series, and the newest one, even though it's on a DS, is my favorite so far. The amount of characters in this game is just INSANE, and what makes me really happy is that more will probably be released as DLC, since they've already announced that Mew2 can be received as a DLC character if you buy both versions of the game. Plus, Nintendo just released GameCube controller adapters for the Wii U, so the C-Stick lives on!

As far as criticism goes, there are a few things I don't like.

I'm really not a fan of the lack of a story mode in the game. I really loved the story mode in Brawl, and Nintendo's excuse for why they didn't include one in this version of the game is just pathetic. Apparently, last time around some of the cutscenes from story mode were leaked online before the game was released, and since a user can only be surprised once, Nintendo decided to cut story mode completely. I also don't like that Nintendo was insistent that all of the characters would be on both versions of the game because as a result Ice Climbers were cut from the game since the 3DS couldn't run at 60fps with the duo characters. While I understand the reasoning for wanting to keep the rosters the same on both games, it's still a bit aggravating that a technological set back caused an iconic character to be cut from the game =/

Finally, I really didn't like that a majority of the playable characters in the game were available as soon as you started the game. My favorite part of all Smash games is unlocking characters, but in this version of Smash, we could only unlock 12 of the 49. It would have been much more fun having to go through "series story lines" to unlock characters. What I mean by that is having only one from each game featured in Smash available from the start of the game and then the rest would be unlocked by using the existing character in classic mode, and then the next character in classic mode to unlock the next character, and so on. ​

However, despite all the criticism I just gave, I still think Smash is a great game and I will continue to spend many, many hours on it.

So, what are your thoughts?

 

Been watching shofu and M2K stream their online 3DS battles, pretty good stuff. I like Sakurai's ambition with all these new character releases. A lot of them are really fucking cool; Little Mac, Megaman, Palutena, Greninja, Villager. Not to mention the alt costumes are bad ass. However, there are already way too many swordies on the roster and some characters like Lucina and Duck Hunt Dog they just did very poorly. I mean, DHD not being 8-bit or having the taunt from the original game? Hello?

I like the new Smash Run addition and the dichotomy of For Fun/For Glory, very solid idea for pandering to all types of players(obviously trying to avoid the blunder that was SSBM). Shoutouts to Milktea.

Ganondorf needs a buff though.

 

I bought the game the day it came out and played it avidly for a couple weeks.

I didn't like it.

Coming from melee, I found that the game had similar problems as brawl. The game is slow and uncompetitive. This is most likely because Sakurai/Nintendo's issues with competitive games. I'm sure you've heard this a number of times though.

Other than the competitive aspect of the game I think it's fairly well made. In particular i'm glad they balanced out the roster for the most part with no characters being significantly stronger than others (looking at you meta knight).

 

I was a freak at Melee on my old Gamecube. Never got the Wii, so I never got Brawl, though I did get to play it (with an old GC controller ofc) and liked it.

 

I purchased a wii just to get super smash bros one of my fav games to play.
I don't think i'll be getting a wii U to play the new version which is a shame.

 

I have it for my 3DS XL.
I've been a fan of the series since N64, I have so many hours of amazing times and memories with friends logged into this series it's a great multiplayer game!

If I had to rank them, from most to least fav: N64, 3DS, Wii, GameCube.

Played the series on the previous console systems and brawl on the Wii. They are pretty fun games. Haven't really been looking into the new games out/coming out for it. Heard the 3DS version was pretty good though, but I'm not sure.

Don't know if I'll be getting a new console just to play it though lol xD

i played brawl the other day for the first time, and it wasn't too bad, most the characters have the same moves from melee and theres meta knight, makes unfair to evryone playing. Overpowered

 

What does everyone think of the Wii U version? I like it a lot, it's pretty damn good, and there is Smash Tour which fixes the lack of story mode issue

 

Interested in opinions. I don't see myself willing to get a Nintendo console just for that game, but between that, Mario and Zelda, I'd probably throw down the couple hundo.

 

Loved the gamecube version, played that for hundreds of hours when I was younger with my siblings. Wii version I played about 5 hours, didn't really get into waving a dildo around in the air. No plans to buy a Wii U unless it gets discounted a lot. I don't own a 3ds but I plan on buying one eventually.

 

The physics are awkward and air-dodging is broken. I'm not a fan myself but at least it's better than Brawl.

 

Melee was the best end of story. I play it atleast once a week if I have spare time with some friends. It's actually a great way to relax after an exam.

No but we should start a tournament for Melee.

 

You know you could have played Brawl with a gamecube controller, right? I've never played Brawl with a wii controller and I never plan to. I even play the new one with a gamecube controller.

I'd be down for a tournament.

 

I havent played it since I was younger. I like thats they're inviting non nintendo characters in though.

I agree with all your points, the lack of a storyline is indeed a disappointment however I will be buying both games just for the multiplier and online. the original wii version did not have a good online battle system where as both the wii U and 3DS smash does which I massively prefer over a story line.
