    Whats your view on profanity?

As I sat here interviewing a potential employee for the company I assist in managing, I asked him a personal question.

The question was this: "Describe a skill you recently learned and how it affected you?"

His response wasn't that of the usual honesty or truth, but he said he had learned a golf shot. His response, however, ended with: "Yeah i can fucking smash the ball now.

I'm a laid back guy, and I heartily laughed at this, but it got me wondering. What do other people think of profanity? What do you guys feel about profanity and where is it acceptable?

Personally, I only use profanity amongst personal friends that I know use it too. Sometimes, I'll even use it with my parents. It just depends for me, but what are yall's thoughts?

Okay in social settings but shouldn't be used in a professional setting.

I'm not bothered by it and I regularly use socalled profane words, however that isn't to say that I don't know where it's not generally accepted.

I'm of the opinion that language tends to evolve, so just because something used to be unacceptable doesn't make it so today.

I believe that profanity is like a double edged sword. If you use it correctly it can strengthen your statements as they are typically stronger words that show much more power. But you can't over user them, if you over use profanity it just looks like you lack a good vocab.

I think that's a tired statement, I usually curse multiple times in a sentence and I have a pretty extensive vocabulary. I've never thought that in it of itself has made someone look uneducated.

My thoughts are summarized by, "being offended is fucking bullshit" - Adam Kokesh

Like everything you say, profanity should only be used at appropriate times, but I certainly don't think there is anything inherently immoral about saying them.

I curse a fair bit in general conversation with friends or my parents in a social setting but when it comes to professional situations I probably wouldn't swear during an interview just seems unprofessional.

Profanity is usually a stereotypical sign of a person with a limited vocabulary - for this reason I wouldn't use it in the situation described above; a professional environment in which I'm hoping to land a job.

I do swear like a trooper with friends and such, to me it adds some lols to casual conversation. I'm not as bad as some people who have "fuck" every 2 words though.

Agreed with Roary. There's often a strong negative correlation between the amount someone swears and their intelligence. Idk what that applicant was thinking.. You really, really, really shouldn't swear in an interview.

Personally, I don't really swear except in exasperation or pain. Or when playing sports lol

A lot of people in the south swear very casually (at least my city). I don't think he really cared that he did in the interview. But I agree on this 100%

It rlly depends on what setting. Obv with friends it's common but in formal settings using it is just gonna cause trouble

Profanity is acceptable when its directed with friends and not directly at people (my opinion), but when you're in a formal setting you should stay away from it.

I agree with most people on this thread, being profane around companions is alright, although around people with authority and in a professional setting it is inappropriate. One thing I do think is that it's just a word, and it should be treated just as bad as say the word "stupid", that's what I don't get, and I'm confused what makes a word more severe compared to others.

I guess its the conotation each word has with it, we're taught that some words are worse than others, so we adhere to that. But yeah, friends=fine, authority/professional=no.
