I might got some cool insides about how gaming at first seemed to ruin my life but in began to end up in quite an interesting story about it is actually starting to make a living.

Although the story is still pretty much in progress I think it would fit in pretty well since it has both sides of the gaming world. (As for the gamer and the farmer.)

Not 100% sure how bans work, but I'm guessing you posted this before getting banned? Noticed it's for vading, but I would like to know the original reason for the ban before considering your story.

Anyways, I mentioned earlier that I'm going to be starting a blog soon so that people can follow along with the process of writing this book and get some sneak peeks of the content that will be in it. Glad to say that I should have that blog up with my first post within the next two weeks (although I'm really shooting to have it done within a week).

 

Currently working on my new blog and website. Still learning how to get around, but once I have them all nice and polished with some content available, I will post them here.

Also, I will be conducting a few interviews soon with some of the more high profile people that have agreed to participate. I will be including parts of these interviews in the proposal I send off to agents/publishers, and I will also include parts of them in the blog to help build interest in the book. If you want to participate, it's not too late! Please let me know.

EDIT: Just want to clarify, only some of the interviews will be conducted for the blog and book proposal. Other interviews will still be conducted, just at a later time. All of the interviews should end up in the final book in some way or another.

It is definitely true that a simple online game can really change someone’s life; I know from experience! Unfortunately, it sounds like your gambling career has had a negative impact on your life. I am sorry to hear this, and I wish you the best while overcoming this challenge.

I don’t doubt that your story is interesting, but I am not sure that it will be appropriate for this book. I am looking primarily for individuals that have made significant contributions to the development of these markets, games, and communities. These individuals are likely to be great fits for the book. On the other hand, those who have experiences that are primarily beneficial (or detrimental) to themselves rather than the community are less likely to be good fits. These individuals need aspects of their story that really set them apart from others. For example, a flower host that only hosted the standard games all day and made a moderate profit is unlikely to be interviewed. A host that designed new games, owned a large clan, made enormous profits from skilled play rather than luck, etc. is likely to be interviewed.

EDIT: I will certainly be discussing the consequences (and benefits) of RuneScape's gambling movement in the book. I was intimately involved with the gambling movement, and I have seen firsthand both some of the horrible consequences and some of the amazing benefits associated with it. Gambling is of course a very controversial topic, and although I am, personally, fond of the gambling movement overall, some of my experiences still haunt me to this day. Numerous times I have witnessed players threaten suicide after large losses only to log out and never log in again. I truly hope these individuals never followed through, but there is no way of ever knowing.

Quick update on the status of my site and blog. It seems I underestimated how long it would take to get a quality website up from scratch! I am still working on it and am nearing completion. However, I do not want to start promoting the website until I am satisfied with the quality of it. I am not sure exactly how much longer it will take to finish the site, but it will be ready soon.

 

Just an update.

I need this website and blog up before I can continue doing anything else. As I said before, it will be up soon. The website and blog will be the best place to contact me and get up-to-date news about the book.

Once the website and blog are up, you can expect the following:

1. The initial post on this thread will be revised and clarified to better express what the book is going to be about and what sorts of people I am looking to interview. I have narrowed the topic a bit. The book is going to be an ethnography of RuneScape and its associated real money trade markets. Rather than broadly focusing on a variety of games, I will be using RuneScape as a case study for real money trade in general. Much of what I originally planned to have in the book will still be in there. More on this later though...
   
2. Some interviews will be conducted.
   
3. Regular updates, sneak peeks, and other material will be published on the blog.
   
4. Expanding reach and platform. I will be marketing the website on a variety of real money trade forums, RuneScape fansites, Twitch streams, YouTube, etc.
   
5. You will be able to subscribe, for free of course, to a monthly newsletter that will supplement the blog and website.

There are many other exciting developments that will be revealed in the future, but I need to get these 5 things done (and some other basic stuff) first.

For those of you interested in a timeline, I am currently planning to query an agent and attempt to land an amazing publisher (i.e. a New York house) in December or January. This should give me enough time to build up my platform, create a lot of quality content on the website/blog, and go through a multitude of revisions of the book proposal. After that, I am guessing that the publisher will give me a year to complete the final manuscript. Then there is a bit more time after that in which the publisher puts together the manuscript into a finished product. Then it will be available for sale!

Please let me know if you have any questions. Also, if you are interested in writing a nonfiction book, feel free to ask me any questions about the publishing process. I would be happy to offer guidance and refer you to proper resources so that you can save a lot of time.

 

Hey Everyone,

I am glad to say that the majority of major content for my site is finished. I am still working on a few things which I want up before I publically launch the site. This includes a few blog posts, a newsletter sign-up form that can be incorporated on the site, some beautification, and a video.

College is starting back up for me now which means my schedule is going to be a little hectic while I move in, get back into the swing of classes, start networking and reaching out to recruiters, etc. I probably will not be around as much, but rest assured that I will continue to make good progress on this project.

I know that this website is coming out later than I said it would, and I apologize. I was a little naïve about how much work goes into making a site considering this is my first time doing so. I absolutely will not rush just to release a suboptimal product though. I am going to make sure that this website portrays all of the care, dedication, and passion that I will be putting into this book. Once it is at that point, I will release it to the public.

Recruiting and classes are taking a lot more time than I anticipated this quarter. I've had to put this project on hold temporarily as a result. Sorry! Once I have finished all these first rounds and applications and midterms I should have a lot more time to start working on all this again.
