I'm sure there are some other avid chess fans here on Sythe. I've always loved Chess but just got back into it recently and I have to play online a lot because my friends all suck / don't play.

It's surprising how much the "meta" of Chess has evolved, but I still can't get enough. It's a good way to give your brain muscles a good stretch, practice strategy, and hone your critical thinking skills, all of which I believe carry over to other areas of life.

What do you think? Do you play? How long have you been playing? etc.

I find it interesting even though I'm awful at it. I tried to sit down and learn moves and sequences a few times but it just doesn't seem to be something I'll be good at.

The learning curve is very steep. It's a bit easier to get a handle on once you learn the basic principles and strategies behind piece movement and board control. Memorizing specific sequences of openings is for the more advanced players. If you're ever in the mood shoot me a quick message I'd be glad to sit down and have a game or give you a few tips.

There's a fair bit of piece movements to memorize, as well as general board set-ups and strategy. Like I said, the learning curve makes it tough if you aren't genuinely interested in playing.

I used to play competitively when I was younger, I won a 200 person tournament once, and placed 18th in state one year. If your familiar with ratings, I had a 1450 rating at one point. I don't play competitively now, but I play for fun.

I used to play a lot of chess, hell I've read a few chess books. I'm not any good and can't remember strategy to save my life.

@OP, you say that the meta of chess has changed a lot recently. What do you mean by that?

Well, not so much recently, but between the time I used to be into competitive chess and now a lot of new things have come forth. In particular I was referencing new movesets, openings, and strategies coined by specific individuals. Such as the Bobby Fischer trap, the Fried Liver attack, Slav Defense (pawns at d5 and c6 against pawns at d4 and c4), etc.

I go to a chess club in my school, it is a good way to test your brain and help learn strategies.

Chess is cool, learned it while I was young and played it for fun. Never really thought about the competitive seen with it as much, but I was pretty skilled. Haven't played in a while now though. We should have a match sometime :p

I find chess to be a great game due to the fact that you really need to think about every move you make and your opponent makes but I don't really play it often as I don't have anyone irl to play with but I might try that online one you posted.
