Any tips for Garen?

I'm currently bronze 3 and wanted to know if any high elo players like to play Garen. He is my favorite champion and I plan to get good with him.

I personally love Garen but I think you should focus on other top champions in ranked. I play Garen top , Pref Renekton, Nid (etc)

 

I used to play a fair amount of Garen. Basically you just have to pick him into the correct champions and punish with your Q. Not a terribly difficult champion

 

try to only counterpick garen, and when you play garen try to bully your lane unless your paying against a ranged champion

Just saw a sick garen player on my team, basically build tanky items, such as sunfire and thornmail why? Everyone is going to want to kill that guy spinnin at them. Try to get on their adc, smack em with your q, and spin to win. Ult. Your team should've chopped their team by than.
Also build health its important :

Before anything, you can't just pick him all the time as you'll put yourself in hard situations where you may not even get a chance to tank up for the win.

First Tip:
He'll have a hard time against Ranged Champs or champ that can poke you or keep you at distance:
- Jayce
- Teemo
- Panth
- Yorick

Second Tip:
Use your passive wisely. Don't go yolo all the time, try to play passive until you regen well and can get back to laning.

Third Tip:
Don't go all in for damage, get at least 3-4 defensive items.

Fourth Tip:
Read Guides / Look at youtube gameplay and mostly PLAY a lot, you'll learn fromyour mistakes and will know when and when not to trade.

You forgot to add Ryze, it's like impossible to win lane without a gank against him.

 

He's rarely seen at higher play (<1% of games, I'd say.) There are champions that do what he does, but do it better.

He's a pretty potent lane bully, but he doesn't translate very well past the lane phase. At low levels of play I can see him being abusive.

 

Sustain and use q often to silence

 

Only problem with Garen is that top lane can't really carry games, and if your team is shit (which they will be because you're bronze) by the time you really get items and have some map presence it can already be too late. TBH if you want to break out of bronze, your best bet would be to play mid carries or junglers

Edit: To add to this, if you want slightly more presence on ANY top lane, teleport is your friend!

 

Top lane can carry... If Top is an assassin (Kha'Zix, Fiora, etc...) and fed, he'll be able to quickly kill mid and adc, leaving very few damage dealers to the opposing team.

 

No one gave good advice.
Garen dominates low elo play so you're absolutely fine playing Garen.
Start Q but max E. Every chance you get you need to get close and then hit Q right when you're close to your opponent and then spin. Back up after you spin and make sure you don't do this by diving through a huge minion wave or without a warded river so you don't get ganked without your Q up (which is great for beating junglers with slows).

First item back should ALWAYS be giants belt unless you die early. Rush sunfire (don't get boots early, rush the sunfire as your first and only item outside of your doran's starting item or your cloth starting item).

Once you get the sunfire you can go for boots + brutalizer. After that, the rest of the build is up to you but I recommend Randuin's, or if lane is over quick and the enemy ap is daunting then get a spirit visage.
First 3 items should be Sunfire > Brutalizer > Randuin's. Make sure you land that ult and just beast mode on them.

I wish the people here would have given better advice instead of jumping on the bandwagon thing to say about Garen not being a top pick even though you're playing in low elo -__- lmao

I'm sorry, but as a top laner I don't disagree with you saying Garen is viable-- hell, I've lost to some in diamond. Garen is especially good for new players. But thinking about a build path so linearly especially for a new player is not a good idea.

Generally the brutalizer on Garen is a better first back. You can cs better and actually do damage. If you're against a very difficult lane there's nothing wrong with going full tank because that's what Garen does best, but I don't recommend going back for a giant's belt first except in a few cases. You'll lose lane just as much, only 400 health slower.

Take their team comp into account-- do they have something like a trynd top j4 jungle? Get ninja tabi, chain vest, and giant's best asap.
Irelia top? You're going to want that Giant's belt-- she is very difficult to itemize against and health is the best way to counter true damage.
Lulu top & amumu jungle? You still want that sunfire but don't even think about it until you have merc treads and a cowl or hexdrinker.

If you're not having trouble though there's nothing wrong with rushing that brutalizer. After that, generally build tanky and turn your brutalizer into a cleaver late game.

As far as gameplay goes, get a point in q and max e, fuck his lane up. Remember to cs as well as you can-- it's alright to use your q to last hit a minion. When you get a chance you can auto-q-auto-spin or q-auto-spin depending on your close you are to him, to put down the mad harass. Also remember, it's generally not worth it to go in for a q harass if he's standing in his minions (early game. late when you have armor it's not a big deal.). The minions will chunk you down pretty hard. Just focus on cs until good opportunities come up.

 

Everything is viable in Bronze.
