RuneScape Authenticator!

Literally no reason not to have this. And if you live in a cave.. go get a smartphone -_-.

RuneScape Authenticator means you (or anyone) can only log in to your RuneScape account if they have your mobile/smart device. You can also mark a PC as safe for 30 days to stop you having to re-enter codes for a month.

You can add your RuneScape account to the same app as your Sythe.org account as well.

 

Good look, very smart to have this.

 

Even if you don't have a smart phone you can use the authenticator with your PC by following the steps below. However, it will make render the two step process less secure as an attacker would just need access to your computer rather than your computer and your phone.

Step 1) Download WinAuth you can get this Googling 'WinAuth' under the Download section scroll down to where it says WinAuth 3.0 and click where it says WinAuth 3.0.21 to start downloading it.

Step 2) Locate the WinAuth file you downloaded, open up it's folder and drag the program out to your desktop. You should see a blue icon.

Step 3) Go to the RuneScape Home Page mouse over where it says 'Account' at the top right corner of the page and click on Authenticator. Once you are on the RuneScape Authenticator page, click the 'Set Up Now' button and Log In.

Step 4) You should now see 'Step 1: Get The App' pay that no attention. Under Step 2 it should say 'Code Won't Scan?>' click on that and it will say Enter 'Random 16 Digit Code' and choose Time Based.

Step 5) Copy the 16 Digit Code you got from the 'Code Won't Scan?>' section. Now open up WinAuth on your PC and click on 'Add' and choose Google. Under Name enter the RuneScape Account Name you will be setting up this Authenticator for. Underneath Number 1 paste in the 16 Digit Code and click Verify Authenticator, you should then see a 6 Digit Code under 3 with a Green Loading Bar, click 'OK'. You will then be prompted to enter a P-Word to protect your authenticator in case your computer is compromised, this is optional I clicked cancel personally myself.

Step 6) On the WinAuth screen you will see 'RuneScape Account Name' and 6 Digit Numbers. After about 30 seconds or so the code will expire and become invalid. So what you do when it runs out and becomes nothing but dash symbols ----- right click the Loading Arrow and enable Auto Refresh, this will give you a new 6 Digit Code that will last 30 or so seconds before it will expire and give you a new one. Step 7) What you might want to do next to make it easier if you cannot quickly remember things is to split your Web Browser Window on one side of your monitor and your WinAuth Program on the other side so you can see them both. Then go back to the RuneScape Authenticator Page you opened up and under Step 3 type in the 6 Digit Code before it expires and click Finish.

Please Note: The next time you log in to RuneScape you will log in as normal and it will prompt you for a 6 Digit Code. This is where you open up WinAuth to get your code each time upon log in and enter it. Or you can choose to Trust Your Computer for 30 days and you will not be prompted for another code within those 30 days.

If you have more than one account then you will want to repeat the same steps, just rename the other accounts accordingly how you like. This is so when you log in you will know which Toon you are getting the log in code for.

This is an absolute trash replacement for JAG, not sure why they're removing JAG but it isn't a good idea.

If you get keylogged someone can log into your email and reset your authenticator and empty your bank at the same time.

I'd be all for it along with JAG but removing it entirely was a terrible decision.

JAG is dumb. It used to mess up with my dynamic IP's.

I never got JAG because it just seemed like a big hassle for me. I got this immediately when it came out though and looking to be a really good replacement to JAG.

doubt it, if someone says that some1 stole their phone, and took their rs acc that'd would be all they will need to get acc back aslong as they had all the other old recovs

 

Honestly, I think authenticators are fan-bloody-tastic.

I wasn't a very big fan of JAG, but if it's being removed then I'm curious what this will really do for account security.

 

Yes, Sythe was the first to think of two factor authentication.

 

I hope so, but I doubt it. Jagex is hell-bent on returning accounts to the original owner, no matter what.

 

Accounts will still be recoverable by the original owner most likely. More so to stop RWT than for the safety of their players, lets be honest.

 

I'm really glad they implemented this. My RS account hasn't been secure for quite some time but now with this I think it'll be safe.

 

I'm kinda on the fence about this. Jagex has been sorta flip floppin all over the place lately on what you can do and what you can't do and what you can do through their services. The fact that this is jagex makes me think its going to suck one way or another.

 

It's nice to see Jagex listening to players a little more regarding the removal of JAG. Personally, JAG was never a problem for me, never had any issues and found it easy to use.

What would be a nice addition would be the ability to have upper and lower case letters within passwords
