Meh I personally learned to drive on manual, and have always owned and drove manual cars.. but sometimes I just seriously hate traffic and town driving, can be fun sometimes but other times a pain in my ass.

The only hard part about driving manual transmission is learning to co-ordinate your clutch and your gear stick. Once you've got that down, the rest is as easy as an automatic considering it just becomes a natural reflex after a while. You tend to be a bit more alert and driving isn't as monotonous either, so arguably it's safer as you're constantly having to think about your driving just that little bit more.

I usually tend to drive a late 80s manual transmission Mitsubishi Pajero. Goddamn awful car, tires need replacing, had the wrong differentials on it when we first bought it, no power steering so the worst thing in the world to park, but because of all that it actually ends up being pretty fun to drive, haha. The only thing I lament about it is having to do tight 3-point turns or tight parking manoeuvres due to lack of power steering.

I had fun reading that post.

OT: I drive an automatic. A lot of newer cars with automatic transmissions have it set up so you can switch it to manual control (not literally manual since there's no clutch, but you can control the gear by moving the gearshift over and then up or down). I wouldn't have figured so many people would love the hell out of their manual transmissions, but then again, I live in the US so I don't get very much perspective.

The worst part about it is that the steering / wheel alignment isn't perfect, so you veer from side to side sometimes when going fast down the highway.

    --

In Australia the mentality is generally that you should get your manual license in case you end up needing to drive a manual car. This mentality in turn causes a lot of people to buy manual cars, so it's a vicious cycle.

Yeah since imported american trucks arent super popular and outrageously expensive in the UK. But I am not talking about big trucks im talking about CARS.

Seriously though, when the japenese cars are 2x bigger than yours there is something wrong! Most every englsh car I have encountered was clown car sized , two doors and had a joke of a backseat. I just dont get it.

Thats bullshit, two friends just got back from the UK and told me there were fat diabeetus looking fucks all over. Ive heard from several others that it is NO better than US as well. In every casual pic they had taken ended up having some fat fuck in the backround. Shitty processed foods and sedentary lifestyles have hit every semi developed area hard not just the US.

I have not considered the potentially smaller lanes though .

If there's such a noticeable difference in car preference comparing the UK and the USA, I'd daresay there's a range of factors including but not limited to marketing, geography, street and road limitations, fuel economy and awareness of such, and the list goes on.

Also, when I was in Japan, I noticed most of the cars I saw looked blocky as fuck and me and a German friend I was staying with used to compare them to refrigerators. I lived there for a year and travelled all the way from Tokyo to the far south of Japan - from city to country - so it's not just an isolated thing either. Arguably I could say "I just don't get it", but I didn't see much of the same style of "Japanese imports" in Japan.

Along this same line Europe loves diesel while the US does not. I really want a diesel Subaru but they don't sell them here.

Manual is not as hard as people make it out to be. It's really rather simple.
