    Any Computer Science Majors?

Hey guys, at the moment I'm working on getting though general education making sure to take computer science classes that will count for upper division stuff.

If any of you have majored/are marjoring in CS I'd like to hear your thoughts.

How did you like the program?
    Likes/Dislikes.
What job do you have now?
    What was the most difficult?
    What was the most enjoyable?
    etc.

Personally I think I'll enjoy it but the math portion will be somewhat of a challenge. I'm good but not great with it. I've gone through calculus but never felt great about it.

Pretty sure KMJT, Govind, Matthew, SuF all have graduated with degrees in Comp Science/IT or are perusing it at current.

I PM'd all but Matthew to check out my thread, thanks! The only one that I knew out of that list was SuF.

How did you like the program?
Of course I like it. Never do anything you don't like.

    Likes/Dislikes.
Programming makes you feel empowered. Having the ability to do pretty much anything on the computer and phone is very useful. It can be frustrating learning concepts and syntax to new languages though.

What job do you have now?
    None.

    What was the most difficult?
Learning concepts at the beginning. I think it is one of those things where the beginning is the hardest. Once you learn concepts for a particular language, they are almost always present in another language, so learning new languages usually is easy.

    What was the most enjoyable?
Having a vision for a program and making it happen.

I hope you're not studying this degree with the expectations of walking into a £25,000+ paying job when you finish Uni.

    * I like the program; it's been a hobby of mine since I was a kid.
    * like: I enjoy doing it and I enjoy being the guy people go to for help.
Dislike: in my uni there are a lot of very difficult "requirements" that are marginally related to the degree and won't really help a programmer in his real world career.
    * Job: none at the moment; got a J2EE development job lined up in a few days though.
    * most difficult thing: the math requirements, especially discrete mathematics and linear algebra (matrices)
    * most enjoyable: shoving my good grades in other people's faces :D

No really, the most enjoyable thing is just that I enjoy comp sci and I'm good at it.

I have no expectations to work on a degree relating to my job at all actually. I'm considering going to law school or opening a business.

Thanks KMJT/Govind for the quick response. The math is going to be a bitch I'm sure.

How did you like the program?
I enjoy the courses actually related to computer science. As Govind said, there's a lot of bullshit requirements that you have to complete in your first years.

    Likes/Dislikes.
    - Like: Programming. I'm very good at it and went into it being good at it. Though Java was relatively new to me I scored 100% in both my intro and advanced Java classes without so much as studying a single minute.
    - Dislike: I fucking DETEST math. Discrete math wasn't so bad, but at my school they shove calculus straight up your ass and it's not pleasant.

What job do you have now?
I'm a theatre manager and background actor in movies and stuff, but only because I haven't yet graduated.

    What was the most difficult?
Calculus II, hands down. I hear most schools only go to Calculus I for comp sci, but my school likes to make its comp sci students cry.

    What was the most enjoyable?
The further into your degree you go, the faster paced it gets. I like that. There's a class I get to take next year called "Comparative Programming Languages" where we learn like 10 languages in one semester. In contrast I've learned only 3 this year (2 really, since BASH scripting doesn't really count). Programming and basically de-constructing everything and making algorithms is what makes me tick.

Every program is very different. I love programming but sometimes it can be super boring and tedious.

I had to do discrete math, stats, and calc II for my degree. None of them was all that bad.

I've got an internship this summer. Not sure what I'll be doing yet but it likely be c++ development.

None of my classes are all that hard. They are just annoying.

I did something similar to CS, called Information Science which's almost the same just a bit different subject wise. Doing freelance now and earning 40USD an hour, a few months after graduating. To be honest, I learned nothing doing the degree, I just learned android myself once my course got over and learned everything myself. As long as you push yourself daily to learn more and dont sit stagnant at one position, you can easily hit 100k USD a year.

Awesome feedback, I'm going to give this just one more bump before I give it a close.

There were three math subjects I hate in CS. Not the calculus ones but the logic part. Not really good about it though I really enjoyed learning how to program. It's kinda awesome that you can make your computer do stuff that you want ^_^

No, I don't enjoy it, but I'm good at it so I'm going to stick with it. I don't like being told what I have to program, especially when the projects try want us to do are beyond our level of competency. I know it's meant to challenge us, but it doesn't help to be confused for hours on end util googling has failed and you have to either find a friend who knows, or sick it up and ask the instructor for help. Yes, again, we're supposed to learn by being challenged, but it's not helpful when we weren't given proper instruction on how to get a start. The textbooks are never helpful, I just find myself lost in the sheer volume of information. Idk

    Likes/Dislikes.
I like the projects when they're in our skill level. I dislike the people in the major. They're often unapproachable and unsociable

What job do you have now?
I work IT and systems for the school library

    What was the most difficult?
Switching to new languages cold turkey, without any preumption, and having instructors assume your proficient to an equal degree in all popular high level languages. I.E. Our assembly instructor just assumed we could all program in C++ even though we've ALL only had official instruction in Java and html/CSS.

    What was the most enjoyable?
Learning new languages when the instructor understands that our knowledge in java doesn't guarantee innate knowledge in other languages.
