    It's more complicated than it seems. For example, if you have five pages open do you have five separate connections to the chat system? No? Well then you have to use intercom or similar to proxy chat messages around, and one of the active tabs has to host the main connection. But then you have more trouble because the background tabs don't update reliably on modern browsers (to save CPU).

    I'm not saying its impossible but until there is widespread adoption of chat, I'm not going to burden every page of the site with it.

    Couldn't you just write your own (or find one) asynchronous chat protocol? Just stick them in a DB and stuff. Then you don't have to deal with connections and stuff.

    The protocol isn't the issue. The issue is exactly mirroring the same chat client on several tabs without overuse of resources both on the client end and on the server end.

    Basically: Either every tab has a "connection" (be that a long poll, a series of short polls, a websocket, or whatever), OR there is a single "connection" that is shared somehow between the tabs. (I put connection in quotes because I don't necessarily mean a direct TCP connection but rather a means of obtaining and sending data to the server.) The second option is far preferable. Many users have dozens of sythe tabs open at the same time. In addition to the resource overhead on the server, browsers limit the number of simultaneous connections to the same server. The chat clients also have to sync perfectly so that a message sent in one tab will appear as a message sent in the others.

    As I said before it's not impossible, just tricky. I have a partial solution using intercom.js already written up. If enough people start using chat I'll do some more work on it.

    Are you able to make use of a shared local cache to sync up all the different instances? Then you can just talk to one of the tabs and make the rest sync through the cache?

    Yes this is exactly the model I am talking about. Except I use intercom.js which makes use of whatever type of local shared data is available.

    That's the whole issue. Having it in every page makes a lot of connections and is slow and stuff. Richard is working on something for that.

    why i suggested a docking feature, so the one client transfers over to the next page, granted this would cause it to reload it time you change pages im sure i t could work like how the facebook system works.

    I tried to do this and I can't. Its due to some stupid DOM crap. Matthew will have to look into it.

    I've fixed the PM command so it lets you know what you have PM'd. I'm going to submit that to Richard when I have time.
