Texting while driving

Just as a note, suppose you had a car weighing 1,500 kilograms travelling at 60kmph.

Then, momentum = mv = 60 * 1500 = 90,000 Ns. If you hit a pedestrian, who has zero momentum, assume that, like a perfect Newton's cradle, all momentum is transferred over a very short time (let's suppose 5 milliseconds as an example).

Force = ma = dp / dt = 90,000 / 0.005 = 18 million Newtons of force applied to a single pedestrian body. Naturally due to resistive forces the figure will be less in reality, but considering the figure, it's a wonder anyone who gets hit even lives sometimes.

 

I never text and drive. It would put my life in jeopardy and the lives of those around me as well.

But what did the person you slammed into do to deserve such an early death. Yeah, the texter might be naturally selected out, but what about the poor guy you hit? That's why it's so important that laws crack down on texters- for everyone else's sake, not the texters.

I only do it when I see fit too though; I never do it while driving fast or in busy sections.

Also I sort of text without looking at the phone so all is good

 

I'm guilty of this, but I VERY rarely do it while moving. 95% of the time, I do it while waiting for a stop light.

 

I don't text and drive. After I had my automobile accident last year it scares me to look off the road for more than a couple seconds.

 

I don't ever text and drive, but I do change songs on my phone quite often. I should probably stop doing that.....

 

I have pretty much stopped doing this, just too risky

I do it all the time. I try to be careful though and do it where i'm comftorable, i should stop nontheless.

 

I snapchat and drive.... I shouldn't.. Every time I hear a commercial about it on the radio, I drop my phone a respect what they say... but I'm like addicted to my phone. Maybe I should try to get less attached

 

The whole idea is that when your mind is not focused on the road it's focused on other things. Even though you could be looking at the road it doesn't mean that you're focused on it. Half of the people who claim they're good at it are only good at not being caught.

Coming from someone who's seen this sort of thing cause real damage - I wouldn't and don't. I just don't think a text that says "what you up to" is worth endangering others, and yourself.

We need to learn to disconnect once in a while. Is 15 minutes away from the phone going to kill you? If you need to speak with someone pull over and call them.

This thread is a few months old now, but I certainly am guilty of it, I find myself suddenly looking up and thinking fuck, and seeing my car slowly tilt towards the wrong side of the road, I always think to myself, damn, what if I realised a second later, I could be dead. It's lame but annoying to pull up for just 1 text.

 

The only time I'll check my phone will be at the red lights, other than that it's just dumb since you're not only putting yourself at risk but other innocent people as well.

Driving is dangerous regurdless. People just need to drive responsibly. Some people can hold their phone close to the window so they see their phone and the road, and some people don't even look at their phone while typing. But if you're like that dumb bitch in the video who can't take her eyes off her phone for a split second to realize she's facing incoming traffic then you shouldn't be texting and driving. Texting isn't the only thing that can distract a a driver, so generally people just need to be careful.

 

I love how everyone who says "yea i do it but i do it carefully" don't realize everyone thinks like that untill the day they crash. reall, how dumb can you be? I don't drive yet but I sure as hell won't do it
