New to GFX! Two sigs I made

Hey Sythe! I decided to try out soing some GFX since I am very bored after being banned on RS. I would want some feedback on these two signatures I made
I'm new to this so don't hate, "gfx artist lel"

Made a new one which I personally think is awesome

 

very basic and clean. Its good for a new GFX artist, i mean, atleast its not overdone with textures slabbed on and unsettling lights flashing all over lol.

You'll get there in time, just need to keep doing what you're doing GL

Ah i remember doing a sig for u LONG time ago (i think it was when i was doing free ones at my beginning). I would suggest to work on the text and to do free sigs for people (like i started). It got me where I am right now! I did over 70 free signatures before actually charging them like 2$? lol Keep practicing and ull get better! Trust me

My suggestion is to devour as many tutorials as you can and look at the work of good GFXers. Even if the tutorials aren't for sigs then they can help by teaching you techniques that are useful in sigs.

 

Go on www.deviantart.com and search up tag tutorials. You will learn a lot.

i just want to say don't have that attitude towards graphics. thats the biggest part of being a graphic designer is know what looks good. if you think it looks like shit then why did you make it that way, why would some one else want to look at some shit, you know what i mean. but as a graphic design you will always thank that you are not good, as i have found out by my experience. you will always thank you can do better but you still got to know when to stop.

i know i didn't critique it but i just wanted to give you a bit of advice

I can tell that your skills are quickly progressing, just by comparing the top signature with the bottom three. You are definitely getting better at rendering backgrounds with smudging, blending, sharpening, etc. However, I think you need to work on how you blend the main figure/focal point with the background; the robotic woman appears to be thrown on top of the signature instead of being part of the background, especially the large hand on the right side of the signature. It looks like the outside of it has quickly been smudged.

Another thing you should work on is creating dramatic lighting, which adds depth to the piece. Intense lighting can be achieved through using a soft brush (or any other brush that looks cool) in certain areas on a separate layer and changing that layer's blending mode. This makes darker areas (background) become darker, and lighter areas (main figure) appear lighter.

Also, consider making your signatures much smaller, maybe half the size of your current ones. There are some issues with your typography as well (Trajan Pro is extremely overused), but worry about that later on once you've gotten better with the actual graphic elements of the signature. Finally, like others have said, tutorials are very helpful! :nuts:

 

Just going to have to comment on this a little. There are a couple of good tips on this, but the suggestion on lighting is extremely off. You can't really ever get good lighting by soft brushing alone. It will look like you just soft brushed your lighting on. Your lighting is just like every other piece in a signature you have to blend it so that it looks natural. I suggest you lean to light by using stock imagery mixed with blending modes and filters and also the dodge and burn tool. The problem with soft brushing lighting is that the light looks unnatural. My suggestion is to look through photo books and find people who are REALLY good at photography (Ansel Adams comes to mind) and observe how their lighting is set up in their photos. Learn how lighting falls and how intensity changes colors. You can get some good lighting that way.

But disregard all of what I just said until you learn about composition and how to arrange elements.

 

Yes, I agree with you for the most part, but I mentioned this technique (combined with changing blending modes) because it is easy for beginners to use until they become much more familiar with PhotoShop and lighting in general. When used correctly, it can appear natural. And you're right, the burn and dodge tools are definitely useful with lighting.

Also please, please, please change your text. I kinda cried when I saw the text on the last three sigs. (And the text on the earlier ones is okay because it is barely readable). The text should flow - it should be part of the piece, not something you slap on at the end.

If the piece has a blocky feel, feel free to use bold text. Use similar color schemes - play with opacity. Also, text doesn't have to be straight up used with the text tool. Warp it, rotate it, make it flow.
