drawn ASAP Rocky portrait

this is my first ever portrait.

Wow. The detail is really amazing. What materials did you use?

 

First of all: the hands and the rings look awesome. Especially the rings have a lot of detail and are nicely shaded.

It would have probably been a better idea to start with a better reference picture. His head is tilte to the back, which is rather hard to draw, especially for a first time. Because of this, the head looks out of proportion: the nose looks too small and the mouth looks too big. The irides are out of proportion too - the left one is larger than the right one and don't look round to me.

Try to draw the hair too next time, it looks unfinished like this. I really like the shading between the left eye and the eyebrows, try using that in the rest of the drawing, it will probably give it more dimension.


Edit: I just noticed this wasn't a CnC and I did give quite a bit of criticism. I'm just trying to help you. It already looks good, especially for a first portrait, but maybe you can use this for your future drawings.

 

yeah i love cnc. but with the proportions i printed the picture and traced it so thats the proportions of the pic. but thanks for the criticism.

 

i just used a used a pencil set an i had 2 mechanical pencils one with hard led an one with soft led and its on illustration board. and to do this yellow in the updated one i used hard colored pencils, they're not waxy like normal colored pencils. oh yeah i also used a smudge stick and a kneaded eraser.

that was my first one lol but i plan on doing one for my mom an dad grandma and grandpa and sister. it is going to be a year long project i'm going to give it to them next year for christmas.

to improve: the little bit of hair showing needs some work, it just looks like you coloured it in and by the look of your work you got lazy in that bit, because the rest is amazing...

SUCH GREAT ARTISTIC QUALITIES YOU HAVE!
I can design, sketch, shade, blend, and draw very well. But I have never been able to do portraits.
How did you learn? Any tips for me?...I can pretty much draw anything, but I can never do portraits.
