How do you see Canada?

I posted this same thread a couple years ago and got interesting responses, but since then most of those who answered have left the site. I'd like to get some fresh opinions!

What I'm asking is sort of what you think when someone mentions Canada. What's the first thing that comes to mind? How do you see us as a country?

We often take the neutral side of things and kind of keep to ourselves. I always wonder what the international community sees us as being

 

I've been to Canada 3 times and I love it. I wouldn't mind living there if I could. There just isn't nearly as much bullshit to deal with than in the U.S. and the majority of people there are really friendly in that areas that I've been to. I always hear good things about it from people who live there or used to. Hockey is also my favorite sport.

 

When I hear Canada I think of a sub-country. Really quiet in terms of news. I often forget about the existence of it until it's mentioned lol

 

I remember your post. Being from quebec and going to visit other places in canada is a real cultural shift. Even just going to Ottawa is a massive change. Im not used to being addressed in english lol. The french canadians are sruck up assholes who need to get their egos fixed. I hate it. So if you ever come to Canada don't come to Quebec. If you're looking for diversity and a cultural change and you're from america id recommend Q.C but other than that STAY AWAY!!!! Its a fucking circus over here. Politically and socially.

Also our money is plastic and we phased out the penny. Something america can't seem to do.
Oh and we have trailer park boys. One of the funniest under rated t.v shows in existence.

as someone from the UK we don't really have a jist of your political/social system as it's largely seen and associated with America. Maybe you could give me a bit more insight into how you differ from them?

On a totally general level, Most/any knowledge of Canada comes from South Park and media stereotypes if i'm honest

We have completely different political system than the U.S. i don't feel like going into it but ya.

Canada makes me think of mooses, lumberjacks, hockey, maple trees, snow. Everyone I've known from canada is really nice, so the polite stereotype is definitely confirmed for me.

 

We don't have a real democracy, and so far it has worked in our favour. We don't vote directly for who runs the country, we vote for political parties to win their ridings, which are basically just neighbourhoods or regions. For instance, a guy named Jack Layton (cool-ass mofo) was the head of a left-wing party called the NDP in my riding. If he won in my neighbourhood, he would get a seat in parliament, which is basically a representative on the federal level that can vote and address issues specific to their ridings.

The party with the most seats in parliament wins the federal election, and their party leader becomes prime minister. Right now a guy named Stephen Harper is at the head of the Conservative party, which governs the country atm.

This system is better than the one in the US mainly because you don't have 2 parties to choose from. You have several, and you vote for your riding, so your vote directly affects how you carry out your daily life. My riding's current political party is the Liberal party, so if I have any issues in my neighbourhood, I can contact my riding councillor and they can address it almost immediately. This type of regionalized political structure gets shit done for regular civilians like me MUCH faster than they would in the US.

That's just a summary, it's a lot more complicated than that. We have minority and majority governments, premiers who govern provinces, and a senate (that doesn't hold nearly as much power as the US equivalent).

Also, if shit goes wrong, we push right to a federal election. We don't fuck around and keep the same assholes in office.

Socially, there are a lot of differences, the main ones being that we generally lean more towards socialist ideals. Our healthcare is, for the majority, paid for by a mixture of insurance and government, and our tuition fees don't typically exceed 8 grand a year, even for top schools. We have 2 official languages and as I think lame mentioned above, 2 very different cultural shifts. Toronto is also the most culturally diverse city in the world. If you go downtown it looks like a cultural rainbow Right now there's a big scandal involving our mayor smoking crack and trying to cover it up by illegal means. I personally don't mind, the city itself hasn't suffered, just the image of the mayor. If you have more specific questions let me know!

 

I see it as a nice, friendly place considering how people are so trusting that they will leave their houses unlocked and the murder rates are very low in comparison to the rest of the world. Keen to visit some time.

 

I think of the beautiful natural spots near Vancouver, so I feel happy In general, I think of the country as awesome, but that may be because a lot of my friends are Canadian.

I am from the united states. First thing that comes to mind is Niagara falls, dont ask me why I dunno. I see it as a chill place to live both figuratively and literally. I don't know much about Canada since I have never actually been there, I live in northeastern united states so I might take a trip to Montreal and check out the sledding up there or something

What I think of Canada: Nice people - I've been a few times and met a lot of people, and as a general rule they were quite friendly. The Quebecois are the exception to this in general (sorry, folks from Quebec) because they tend to act more like big-city folk in the U.S.
