You shouldn't be smoking weed. Thank your stars that your parents haven't disowned you tbh haha.

But yeah, I'm a Sikh as well. Because of that, I try to lead a morally virtuous life, although I sometimes fail (gambling addiction). The reason I'm disappointed is because in general I imagine the followers of our religion to be very virtuous I guess. Note, I'm not all that religious, heck, I haven't gone to Guduwara in a month or so, but still, I try to present myself and the religion in the best possible light since there aren't that many Sikhs in the US who wear turbans so as one who does, I'm often one of the few people that those around me use to form their opinions on Sikhs (and turban wearers in general). Wow that was a long sentence. But yeah, since I'm a Sikh, I try to give a good impression to others so that they can form good impressions about Sikhs. Does that make sense at all?

 

Smoking weed as a Sikh isn't actually bad... Cutting your hair or drinking alcohol would be seen to be much worse than consuming cannabis. In our culture a lot of spiritual leaders consume bhang (cannabis) to enter spiritual meditation, not many people know this but it is one of the drugs allowed in our religion to be consumed. Your parents probably don't know this or decided it was considered a drug once they came to a westernized society.

Several gudwaras can be found in India where cannabis is served in your tea you get at langar. One gudwara I went to in India had it in the tea and it does actually give you a different perception when you listen to the granth sahib, most of our parents won't accept marijuana because it has been illegal for so long over here and they see it more as a gateway drug even though it is commonly found in our religion. I don't know if smoking it is allowed in our religion but I know the consumption of it is allowed.

I know what you're saying though but those people who are looking negatively at you are breaking another prohibition in our religion (Worthless talk), a lot of our parents think they are religious but they choose the prohibitions they want to follow and expect us to follow them, I personally smoke weed and my parents know I do.

There are several Sikhs where I live and no matter what you do they will talk negatively about you, most Sikhs here break several prohibitions and use religion as a reason to forbid their children from smoking weed.
