    Bump-Merging

I was on a forum the other day and I tried to bump a post slightly earlier then their rules allowed. Instead of making a new post, my "bump" actually merged into the last post made by me and the thread was not sent to the top. This virtually eliminated the possibility of bump spam.

Just an interesting concept I thought I would put up. I'm not sure what other opinions/ the possibility of something like this would be. Always nice to discuss things though :)

Yeah I know of multiple forums, it seems to be the default way of doing things in any site using myBB based forums. It would be a nice implementation.

I have seen this implemented on numerous forums. Other forums have a button which you press after x amount of time and it automatically sends the thread to the top of the section.

Not really at the top of our improvements list. But we'll consider it.

I like the idea and if it was simple enough to do then I would support the idea.

To make it less frustrating for everybody, make it so your thread only bumps once per 8 hours, no matter how many posts it gets. People shouldn't be infracted unless they are obviously spamming (saying one word responses, free posting, thread hi-jacking). It's purely my thought, may be wrong.

And it would be cool if I could post or edit a post without being paranoid I'm going to be infracted. I really think the intention behind the rule (forum wide) is doing more to decrease activity than it is to prevent flooding, because I don't really care about my post count or how many replies my thread has it just pissed me off. As long as my thread is on the 1st or 2nd page it's fine with me.

So you're saying that we have an automated system that bumps EVERYONE's thread every 8 hours basically rendering it useless?

I like the idea of bump-merging to prevent any excessive bumping. Seems like it would cut down on everything and reduce work for the mods as well.

No, there's no way an automated system bumping everyone's thread would work.

Here is what I'm talking about, very simple. A system that would make it so one post per 8 hours would bump the thread, making it virtually impossible for someone to bump there thread early, in a way even your grandma would be able to follow. By not bump, I mean all posts made before 8 hours. But it could also be extended for all market sections to be an effective anti-spamming method.

    Example:

    ANTI-SPAM POSTING SYSTEM

In case you post before the 8 hour mark, you won't have to worry about getting an infraction because when you or someone else posts it doesn't bump the thread until the 8 hours is up.

ONE WORD RESPONSES WILL STILL QUALIFY AS SPAM. Anyone using this system won't be able to bump there thread early - including market giants or people trying to find loop holes. This system does not affect thread reply count. It only prevents your thread from being bumped before 8 hours, and offers no guarantee that there won't be spam replies in the thread.

With this system, the only real drawback is that one can still spam there thread with short replies without bumping it. The simplicity though, both for moderators and users, may make it still worth it.

I'll bring it up with Govind and see if it's something possible for him to do.

    Thanks Sypherz :).
