Name Sniping Rules

They are currently no written rules set in place against sniping. Sythe users shouldn't be allowed to snipe names that are being sold by other sythe users. I think the rule should be created/clarified and put in the name sales rules thread.

 

Super hard to prove, and later enforce.

 

Any time in the past where a name snipe has been proven (very hard - like Blupig said), the sniper has been forced to pay back or ban. I remember 1 or 2 cases, but can't remember exactly who it was or where they are now. This is IIRC.

I think it is a rule, it's just unwritten.

 

It's almost impossible to catch the snipers as they are lurkers who just scout the names thread. We should add a post requirement or something to view the names section.

 

Also, if names have been sniped during a sale on sythe, then if they come up for sale that user should have to remove the name or face infractions. Purely give them the chance to remove it as they might not know it was sniped. I also know that when I sold names (which I'm hoping to again soon) I only used to tell people them through PM, it's amazing how many old users with 1-20 posts PM you, and none of them actually buy any. That's probably why one out the the twenty got sniped. Next time I'm just telling them what they are related to and will only tell users if they put a deposit down, as sniping's shit for the buyer, and then they can just claim that you recovered the account.

There's 1 good method to avoid snipes and help to find potential snipers, provide names only for request not in OP

 

Yeah, but I literally got around 100+ pm's a week and only managed to sell 20 names..

 

so say i wanted to know the name, would you charge me x amount of RSGP to know the name? I think that would be a good idea, even tho users would be willing to waste a tiny bit of gold to know the name, it would still get the cheep sniping noobs off the name and unable to snipe it.

There should be a rule about this, but you never will really know who sniped the name...so how could you enforce it upon anyone?

I've had a thought and charging is actually stupid, just new users I'll check if they're vaders before I give them the names, and make them provide their MSN/Skype.

Users that snipe names and are caught are banned. It's scamming any way you want to put it. The problem we face is the sheer difficulty of proving it. There have been a few cases in the past where we were able to prove it, but those are few and far between.

 

If you implemented something where you were FORCED to give your In-game names and update it with checks done every so often or an auto mated system or whatever. Also make it like a list of account that you own, and that any other account name is not yourself.

That means if you change your name and dont update it and your old name was taken it would be your fault and could not be held reliable.

Example In a signature

"ONLY TRADE WITH "accountname123", "accountname234", "accountname345"

that would let you have a list of names and previous names and then you could prove that it was taken if it was, as a changed name always has a "previous name when hoevered over their current name in game on a friend or ignore list.

It might be difficult or might be easy but thats my opinion and if you could do that, it would provide a large amount of security, or the very least know who scammed.

 

So you're saying that name sellers should have to display the names that are for sale? That'll cause even more sniping. I don't even know why I tried to spend 5 minutes working out your terrible grammar.

 

Just a question if a name is sniped from somewhere off Sythe and then it was sold/became in the possesion of a Sythe.org in a legitimate trade (payed for it ect) whats the ruling on this?

 

If a sniper sniped a name and then sold it, the person who bought that name would not be penalized, as they didn't do anything wrong/ might not have known.

 

So long as they could prove they bought it unknowingly, and they weren't the one to snipe it.

 

Logic:
Jagex allows luring and it's the person's fault for getting lured, so we allow it. ohanditbringsintraffic
Name sniping is not allowed, even though Jagex allows it after 30 days.


Hurr hurr. How about consider also making luring bannable, or make scamming a minor offence as it is on Runescape as well?

If someone can prove a name was sniped, staff will ban them.

 

It would be very hard to sell who sniped the name, let alone prove who did it.

 

Then maybe staff should consider making luring a bannable offence or at least luring Sythe members a bannable or temporarily bannable offense. We can't just use the "RS allows it" or "RS disallows it" argument to justify something that's just as bad as scamming. Using the argument that it's the person's fault for not being careful and it's part of the game trickery can also be used to make scamming seem less malicious. And my least favorite reasoning is that it brings in traffic. I'm sure hacking and child porn would also bring more traffic to the website, but that's not what Sythe stands for.

The fact that the staff just shrugs off luring pisses me off and has pissed me off for quite a while.
