I am currently trying to grow a full beard, real long, something most would call a "ZZ Top Beard" However, I plan to have more of a viking style to it, with small "rope" braids (not sure the actual name of the braid) in different spots as well as my mustache braided the same way.

I am 20 years old. Right now I grow hair very thick in a patch from my bottom lip to my chin and all along my chinline as well as under my chin. My mustache is medium thickness but doesnt connect to my beard, which isn't really a problem as it's currently almost long enough to LOOK like it does. My side burns are pretty thin, but easily visible. On my upper cheek area I can only grow a small patch that goes from close to my side burns to close to my mustache but is very thin and I am currently keeping it shaved because it looks very odd. My beard nearly touches my chest when looking straight ahead.

Now that I'm done explaining what grows and what doesnt, I'll explain my problem. My facial hair is very stringy. If I go more than a week without conditioning it it literally feels like pubic hair. The facial hair rock/rap artist Danny Diablo (AKA Lord Ezec) has in this photo is very similar to how my beard looks the day after it is is conditioned and except for him only having a goatee, his beard/mustache line is very similar to mine. However he is pushing 50 years old!!! (In this picture even though looking young, he is indeed over 40). Anyway, considering how his facial is at his age, is this to say my facial hair will ALWAYS be stringy like this? Will the texture of my facial hair make it un-braidable in the way I want to do it? Is there a way to make it look/feel like the normal hair on my head?

Also, so one would have an idea of what I was HOPING to grow my facial hair to be like, is something like this, much less bristly and more "straight" instead of curly like pubic hair, would this be possible maybe if I took a hair straightener to my beard? lol:

Well id say first off keep conditioning your beard, your beard is sort of like photosynthesis the way plants convert the sunlight into chemical energy in order to grow, your hair needs conditioning in order to get the nutrients needed to grow.

As for getting your hair to grow a certain way there are a load of diffrent ways to do this- one of the main problems is do you want to stay natural or not? Thats if its still natural.

If you want to stay natural id advise-

Eating right your body required vitamin A, B, C, E which mostly affect your hair growth and body developemnt. You can also try and find other shampoos with a lot of vitamins to help your hair grow but this is the only way I can see dealing with the length of your hair forming in into a brittle type of hair would have to be unatural.

Unatural- to make your hair into that brittle form enough for it to be braded of course you have to keep it washed and conditioned as always, but I advise using a certain type of perm on it, to bring out the curls therfore it can get a bit nappy but straight and keep the form which is perfect for people wanting braids.

Well hope this helps you out a bit.

I think it did help, but Im not sure if I understand, it seems like your giving me advice to make it curly, I want it straight :p

Atleast on the perm part anyway, however I will keep conditioning, how often would you say I should do this? I currently do it about once a week.

Some people just have naturally curly facial hair, it wont get much better really. You could always physically straighten it or get it chemically straightened at a salon - meaning you would only need to do it every few months.

Probably dude, and tying your beard in braids won't help the situation. I don't know much about beards but maybe a barber salon could do some treatment on it like a "perm" or somthing and help you out but untill then i'd say just keep washing your beard and see what comes about.
