If you read it as "M M" then it is an... if you read MM as middleman... well you should know.

I'd go with an, since the reason it is done is for pronunciation and an em em is easier to say than a em em.

That's true, though I don't read MM as em em. I read it as Middle Man, same goes for OMM.
