Are you guys trying to kill the forum?

Other games under off-topic? WHY! Now there is going to be close to 0 discussion in there. Not to mention this is still going to force us to stay a runescape centered forum. What are you thinking! There were plenty of good suggestions on how to compact things, with out completely fucking it up, but somehow that was managed.

That was the FIRST thought that went through my head when I saw the announcement. This is a gaming forum, what in hell makes "Other Games" off-topic?

I would support moving the Other Games yet again.

 

I support the move of other dames also, Idk why that's OT.

 

I support that as well. We need to expand from being a runescape based forum.

 

Ye the move wasn't great I actually enjoyed the xbox and WoW general sections. This just made it way harder to find the specific game sections.

although, I personally think that we should cut alot of those subforums down.

Handheld gaming, seriously lol? Nowhere big enough of a forum to split into such small chunks, cut down to a couple subforums and have it as a seperate section on the index.

 

As far as I'm concerned it's alot easier to see it. People tend to scroll over things they don't want to see, so people who reach the Off-Topic box to find General/OT will now also see Other Games among the other sections. Instead of skipping it completely they see the section and have a larger chance of opening it up and actually using it.

 

They were not being "spammed" with those forums. The problem was no one used them because no one used them. No one bothered to make a thread there because they knew no one would respond, so it'd be pointless.

If you want to broaden Sythe's userbase, you can't be confining other possible areas of discussion. You have to take them, and nurture them so that they start to build up in activity as well. Simply putting a subsection out there and saying "ok go at it" is not going to get any new people posting there. If people who were already on sythe wanted to post there, they would. You have to be going out there and finding new members to go and post there. People who are already on sythe come here and think "this is a runescape forum", but people who have never been here could come here and think "wow this is a -insert theme here- forum", so we have to take advantage of that possibility and make them think this forum is for so much more than runescape.

It's not nearly as hard as it sounds. Everyone just wants to add/remove subsections or change some rules and then hope it will work. Those changes can be good, but they are still going to do absolutely nothing in terms of getting new members. It's not as hard as everyone seems to think, and I had plenty of things going in comm dev that could've helped, but unfortunately I had no back up, and so it all failed. It just takes a little bit of effort to get things going. Richard it's not that hard. I guarantee I could write up a plan that would have Sythe growing again within a month. (Inb4haters)

All Sythe needs is a bit of marketing, a bit of innovation, and something to get the pep back in to the step of everyone running it. But just confining sub forums and compacting things as much as possible is not going to help at all.

 

Our problem is that every section we have has numerous subsections that it doesn't need. The game discussion section could be cut down to two sections MMO discussion and PC and Console Discussion. The Runescape section could be easily cut down to 3 or so sections. The Graphics section could easily merge it's two center sections. There are many examples of this.

My suggestion:



Down to
RS General - Subsections: Guides, Minigames, Pictures/Vids, RSC
RS Cheating and Programming Subsections: Programs, Servers



Down to
Sythe Support
Real Life Support (Would merge help and personal support) - Subsections: Guides and Guide requests.

I don't go into the market, but I am sure they could be condensed down more also.

 

Other Games was doing fine, programming was the only one that really deserved to be condensed all the way down. Perhaps a few of Other Games' sections could have been condensed but not the whole topic.

 

Why is Simba/SCAR still on homepage?

 

I never posted in them really, but I liked those two sections aswell. I do know it was fairly inactive, but I still think them being on the mainpage was nice.

 

Valid point. Chuck it into Programming and combine it to Programming & Scripting or something.

 

This change makes little sense to me, considering this is a game website; wouldn't you logically want to show that off?

 

I like Nero's idea, might work out well.

 

The amount if threads I've moved from General Discussion to Other Games is ridiculous.. I'm glad it has been moved to off-topic. A lot of activity is in the off-topic section so it should get more traffic now anyway.

 

Finally. I hated it when people used the "if we have dead sections, they'll magically grow" argument. However, I still don't see how moving a category into a subcategory and leaving all the games in separate categories helps. Merge all of them together and have it in one section. A lot of people are interested in multiple games or gaming in general, but don't want to check 11 different sections.

 

That makes no sense. You're still going to have to move threads, it doesn't matter where the sections are. Also saying that just because it's in off-topic now it's going to get more activity makes no sense either. It's still the same people who would have viewed it if it was up top, so why is that suddenly going to make it active?

Exactly, that was my biggest thing. You can't just put in sections and then wait for it to magically grow. You actually have to do something with them, otherwise, shit's gonna die. Also you could say the same as a counter; simply compacting sections isn't going to help them grow either, but now it's going to be even less in the minds of people, which could easily make it become completely dead.
