    It's instant. If it hasn't shown up you've either given the wrong link or the person hasn't signed up.

    To clarify, for example, if Matthew referred me to sign up, he'd give me any one of these (Matthew's user id is 58054) :

    I've just tested the system and it does work correctly.

    Its better for the site if they are active, but the referrals still count for the purposes of the competition. We may be hesitant to give out prizes if you have signed up 30 completely inactive users, however. For example, if we have to decide a tie between two competitors, we would award to the one with active referrals.
