    It's called SytheIRC at the moment by virtue of it being advertised as such and having a domain as such (sythe-irc.org.) As I've been saying, I have no problem with you guys calling it this, if you follow sythe.org rules (which includes applying sythe.org bans.) The unofficial label also has little relevance, being as its staffed with sythe.org staff, making it "unofficially" official in the eyes of most users.

    Really there are three options:
    1. Call it and advertise it as chatlair (or something else); or
    2. Apply the sythe.org rules and bans; or
    3. Tell the users you really want to be allowed on SytheIRC to stop breaking the rules then it won't be a problem.

    Often times banned users that were misbanned go to the IRC to solve their issues and address concerns with staff.
    Just pointing it out, I'm for making it official and following rules etc.

    Well ok. How about we make it that people who are banned here for serious offences are network banned, and people who are banned for non-serious offences are channel banned, and see if that works?

    That just seems like extra hassle for the staff/network OPs, and pointless tbh.

    I understand your point however, people banned from Sythe should face the all the consequences, including being separated from the community.

    However, this discussion is futile as of now. The webIRC is broken, and its activity has dropped to an all time low. Not many frequent it, due to the issue of it being broken, and as-well as reasons others mentioned.

    Can I ask, why not re-make an official IRC?

    Sounds like a good system. It'd be a much more tolerable place.
    I used to like cam chat too but that became a banned user ran shithole, don't want that around the IRC.

    Let me ask you a question. If 40 of your customers or friends wanted to have a piss-up, where would you rather have it? In your backyard where you are responsible for the event and pretty much everything that happens there? Or a public park, or someone else's backyard, where for all you care they can set it on fire?

    This is not even exaggeration. For whatever reason IRC attracts the worst behaviour on the internet and focuses it down into a boiling point. IRC is bad news. So much so that many hosts won't even let you run an IRCd without their permission. IRCd's are also very commonly associated with botnets, and tend to attract them like shit-flies to shit.

    So, in short, there is no official IRC for the same reason I don't set my living room on fire -- it's a stupid idea and will cost me time and money to fix. I don't even run this one and it's costing me time to fix.

    To be fair, we use the IRC to hang out and chat with other users. Conflicts do arise from time to time, but I have seem them worked out more than started there. It's a fast form of communication, and since all the rules we have in place for the IRC are enforced regularly, problems rarely come up.

    (This isn't a reason to make it official, just saying don't think of the IRC so negatively :p)

    With all due respect, it's a long time since you've been involved in IRC (as far as I know anyway) and whilst it does encourage some stupid behaviour, so does having a spam forum. It's just an outlet for some people and it really has changed the way a lot of users perceive the site; mostly for the better. I really wish you shared my views on IRC and the way it should be managed, but your analogy does make sense.

    As for it costing time and money to set up/maintain, there's been plenty of interest from people who want to manage such a project.
