I've seen a lot worse, and it doesn't get any better as you go higher up in the medical field.

I'm an EMT-B (Pre-Med hopeful), and I've done rotations at both the hospital and in the field. To put it short, I'd rather people not help since the most a laymen will know is probably CPR, and most don't even really know the correct procedure other than "30 compressions and 2 breaths".

That being said, as long as someone calls 911 for BLS/ALS to get dispatched, I'm content. I personally haven't had any bystanders mess things up for me since I haven't been working in the field for very long, but I've heard a lotttt of stories from more experienced EMT's/Paramedics/ER Docs about bystanders actually aggravating a patient's condition.

As for your depression, seek help especially if you're having suicidal thoughts. And ditch that ex-boyfriend of yours, I love referring to this picture whenever I think about getting back together with mine, lol.

Maybe they didn't know HOW to help him? I mean, maybe none of them were in the medical field.

I agree with you, I was talking to some friends the other day and one of them was saying that he wasn't well and fell down whilst walking down a street and lay there, an elderly couple who were walking behind him simply stepped over him and continued to walk. It's pretty sick how people just want to take a picture or video's of people in distress these days instead of helping.

Although I can somewhat understand why people don't get involved in trying to help someone who is injured or being attacked etc, we live in such a blame society where everyone is scared to do something wrong through fear of being blamed or even sued. I know for a fact I wouldn't feel comfortable in terms of trying or knowing how to help someone who is injured because I'd be worried that I may make it worse. However if I ever seen someone hurt or injured I'd feel compelled to at least go and stand beside them and comfort them, it's the least I could do and I'd hope that people would do it for me or my family if they were in a similar situation.

Holy shit Lilly, I had no idea someone else felt the same way! I'm sort of happy that I found someone else who feels like this too. Anyway I know exactly what you mean by all this.

I haven't exactly found a good solution to this mess, but what I can offer is a bit of advice. You have to plow through those 300 hours as fast as you can, and get it over with so you don't have to do it ever again. Once you've done that, just try to avoid situations with large amounts of people, because with a crowd there will always be something that disgusts you (at least it does for me).

As for the suicide, the reason why you can't bring yourself to do it is because really you don't want to. Whether or not you know what's holding you to life, there is something there that your mind knows is worth living for. What I'd suggest is that you figure out what that is, and do everything you can to embrace it and cherish it. If something holds you to life then it's obviously special and could steer you clear of the types of feelings you have. Best of luck!

EDIT: Sorry, didn't read the rest of the thread since there are a lot of long responses, but I saw someone was talking about moving to Canada. It's no different here than it is anywhere else. Generally, people here have been brought up with more courtesy (and first aid training is mandatory in a lot of work positions) but there are still those who whip out cameras and watch as someone dies. I saw a dude get hit by a dump truck down my street, and as soon as it happened people from even a block away SPRINTED towards the accident to help out. Same thing happened when I witnessed a car accident downtown. Even though there tends to always be those 5-10 people who will sprint towards the accident to help, there are generally the 20+ others who decide to stand around and gossip about it later. Since I know the people in the accident wouldn't want me to be gawking at them, I usually keep going about my business but not many others do.

Won't be able to stay away from large crowd's, after my hours are complete i'll be a full time ER-RN at CSMC in LA.

I think between that and my boyfriend situation it was just too much to handle, i can usually be completely fine with what i see at work i believe he just pushed me over the edge.

You don't have to work in the medical field to have an instinct to help.

Well they called the police right? What else did you expect them to do? (not sarcastic, it's a legitimate question).

The man had a major contusion, they could have attempted to slow the bleeding, comfort him, anything.

There are a million other things that could have been done that weren't.
