    Super Nintendo vs Nintendo 64
As you may have figured out by the name, these are the two consoles from Nintendo. The main difference between them is the age as the Super Nintendo (SNES) was first released in 1990 and has been discontinued since 2003. The Nintendo 64 (commonly called N64) was intended to be the replacement of the SNES and was released in 1996. But it never really took over and was discontinued even sooner than the SNES. The SNES was a 16 bit system that was even competitive with early 32 bit systems. With the N64, Nintendo decided to skip 32 bit altogether and went with a 64 bit system; thus the 64 suffix in the name.

The biggest draw with the N64 is the 3D environments as nicely by its flagship game, Mario 64. The environment is quite large and frees the user from typical side-scrolling action that has become typical of older gaming consoles like the SNES. Although there are some 3D games on the SNES, those are nowhere near the level of games on the N64.

The controller of the N64 also saw a lot of changes from its predecessor. The N64 controller has a lot more buttons than the SNES controller. It also has an analog joystick placed in the middle of the controller. The joystick makes it easier to move around in a 3D environment. There is also an increase in the number of controllers that you can use from 2 with the SNES to 4 with the N64. More controllers mean more players playing at the same time. Not all games support 4 simultaneous players though.

The N64 was not as successful as the SNES in terms of sales. The biggest reason is Nintendo’s decision to stick with cartridge format which is more expensive than the CDs that were being used by their competitors. Only 32 million units of the N64 sold while the older SNES sold over 49 million units.

    Summary:

The Super Nintendo is much older compared to the Nintendo 64
The Super Nintendo is a 16 bit system while the N64 is 64 bits
The Super Nintendo games were mostly 2D while that of the N64 is 3D
The N64 controller has an analog joystick while that of the Super Nintendo did not
The N64 can be played by up to 4 players while the Super Nintendo has a maximum of 2
The N64 was not as successful as the Super Nintendo

The SNES is one of the greatest systems of all time. It had lots of great RPGs, the Donkey Kong Country series, Super Mario World, Castlevania IV, Chrono Trigger, and so many more awesome games.

The N64 had some amazing games too...but not enough of them.

Breath of Fire was one of my all-time favorite RPGs.

I'd have to say SNES, hands down. Don't get me wrong, Conker's Bad Fur Day was the game, but nothing could compare to some classic matches on MK3 Ultimate.

I find that I got attached to a lot more of the classics on N64 than the SNES, like Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 64.

I played my N64 a lot more. Games like Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros and Mario Party were addicting as hell. The original Zelda, Mario and Crystalis for the SNES were great games too.

I use to love Mario Kart 64 and the Smash Bro's also, man I wish I could go back in time when that was the major console.

Yeah I literally don't know one person that plays the old systems.

As for Smash Bro',Mario Party, Donkey Kong, they were all great N64 games. But the Super Mario World is always going to be on top in my opinion. Best selling game as well if I am not mistaken?

Id have to say that i enjoyed N64 games more. (Mario Kart, Starfox, SSB, Goldeneye) As I still play those games today in college with my roommates. However, I do think the greatest games of all time come from SNES, that being Donkey Kong Country and all of the marios.

Depending on what you grew up with, is what you'll choose.

I have both a SNES and N64, but own more N64 games.

Purely subjective. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

EDIT: Just thought i'd point out there are still SNES games in development.

I feel like it was easier for me to put time into N64 games... I think that's because they were just the new thing compared to SNES. Just like everyone puts more time into newer video games than older ones..

    I liked them both though..

really? All my buddies play N64 at this one guys house like every day. He sells weed and people just come over, get high, play N64 with him, and buy weed.

I'd like to know what.. I would totally pick them up.

the N64 was my first console. Got it for Christmas when I was 5 or 6. Only ever owned about 7 games but I love(d) them dearly. Never been much of a gamer either. The only consoles I've ever owned are the N64, the Gamecube, the ps1, and the Wii (which I hate, except for the Netflix feature).

I think I'm gonna do that tonight lol

The N64 was a major part of my childhood, but all bias aside I would still say it is the better system. The SNES was great, but it wasn't anything spectacular compared to Atari and Sega. The N64 however revolutionized gaming. It brought 3D graphics and multiplayer to the forefront with some amazing titles such as Super Mario 64, Super Smash Brothers, and Mario Kart 64. The SNES had good titles as well, but wasn't anything really industry changing.

Spectacular how? Please explain. Atari what? 2600? (i'm going to assume)

By calling the MD/Genesis a Sega, you have shot yourself in the foot.

I think you'll find the SNES had 3D games, such as Starwing and Stunt Race FX, utilizing the SNES' FX chip. Sonic CD had 3D special stages on the MegaCD. The Saturn and Playstation were also released BEFORE the N64, featuring a vast long list of 3D games.

They are great titles, but the SNES also had some great titles, which you have ignored.

SNES was the better of the two for me, I still played the SNES regularly around 2000. The N64 had great games like Super mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Turok, Zelda: OOT, Zelda: Majora's mask, and the orig super smash bros, but the SNES still seemed more fun for some reason. N64 was the best multiplayer console back in the day, mainly because you could hook up 4 gamepads.

I remember I got motion sickness from some of the 1st person shooters on the N64, because I wasn't used to playing that kind of game, I overcame it after a while though. My favourite games on SNES were Super Mario World, U.N. Squadron and Final Fight 3.

The thing I liked about N64 sticking with cartriges is the lack of loading time compared to a PS and a Dreamcast which was so annoying. Nintendo waited until CD/DVD technology was perfected before they went into the market with it. As far as I am concerned I like the N64 better because I consider the Ocarina of Time to be the best game ever made.

Not sure as a real young kid I played through Ocarina of time and my childhood was obsessed with it, at the same time lots of nostalgia I have is from watching older siblings play donkey kong country on the SNES so I can't say which I like more, they're both incredible consoles.

I'm biased as I never owned/really played an SNES. My first big game console (I say "big" because I owned a Gameboy Color before this) was the N64 - and honestly regardless of playing the SNES or not, I think I had the most fun on that system - ever. Better than my PS2 after that, or my current Xbox 360..

My parents bought me the Donkey Kong 64 edition N64 - it was a see-through green, really fucking sick - and it came with...Donkey Kong 64. Great fucking game. And of course, let's not forget the classics - Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and Super Mario 64. Great times - wouldn't trade those memories for the world.
