    Any ideas? I usually run a lot but still want to gain muscle.

    Kickboxing is FANTASTIC!

    It probably isn't the answer you are looking for, but whatever. I thought I would throw it out there anyways.. A couple years ago I signed up for some Muay Thai kickboxing classes, and it was fucking amazing. The workouts are so hard and fast paced, you are working tons of muslces in your body and you will pack on muscle extremely fast, while also burning insane amounts of calories.

    Its not as convenient as something you can do at home, or the gym obviously. But it is well worth it if you are really serious about burning fat and beefing up as fast as possible. I only took classes for 2 months, during one summer, but I miss it and I totally want to do it again some day.

    You need to go to an anaerobic stage - irrespective of your fitness level. Might take you 5 seconds by running up some stairs - or you might need to jump over bins for 30 mins if you're fit. You need to get your body into a state where it cannot use ATP (an energy source) from fat and needs to go to other resources.. You know when you hear lactic acid? or you feel nautious.. You need to get to this. I like jogging then sprinting in drills.. You will build muscle n get stripped with a reasonable diet.

    I agree with this, I took a few Muay Thai classes a few years ago. We moved, and I can't find another one here. I missed that, the training was intense, plus you basically have a trainer who will basically help push you to your limits. Unlike what happens to a lot of people, when going to the gym, or doing some kind of exercise/workout they would always post pone it and decide to do it another time. While you're there, you can't just tell your trainer no, you just do as he says. I am trying to get in better shape right now, and if I can find Muay Thai classes nearby, I would take the classes in a heartbeat. It will also be useful eventually ;)

    I do bodybuilding, I'll tell you now it's virtually impossible to gain muscle as you lose fat. However, for losing fat running is the best way.
    Make sure your diet is in check, you could also take green tea extract. Speeds up your metabolism by about 100 cals per day.

    Are you trying to lose weight, or lose fat for muscles like abs?

    May I just add that you should figure out how much calories you should intake to start losing weight. To get a rough estimate on how much calories you should intake a day, multiply your weight by 15. E.G 200 lbs = 3,000 calories daily. The number you get is how much calories you should consume to maintain your weight.

    To lose weight, you need to consume less than that, I'd say 10-15% less, if you want to go slow. You should consume more if you want muscles, don't go overboard of course.

    Could you explain exactly what you want, what is your goal? Muscles specifically where? Lose weight? Or just look better if your weight is normal?

    We could be in the same situation, although I haven't taken mine seriously yet. I want to gain a bit of muscles, and shed off the fat on my stomach. Apart from the fat from my stomach, I look perfectly fine, some would say I look like I work out. I do cardio from time to time, and that's it, my goal is to shed off a bit of fat on my stomach. And later on, work on abs.

    Say you're working out at a gym and you're looking for cardio but want to work your body out as well, what you're going to need is high intensity work outs with very short rests between. What people tend to do, is work out at an intense pace for a short period of time, then take a rest. What you need to do is flip that upon itself. Your goal should be to work your body out till the point of basically feeling like death. High intensity, long bursts of constant workout, followed by a short rest, then pick up the intensity again, keep your body moving and keep your rest periods very minimal.

    I'm impressed by the answers so far, all of them are correct. :) To add onto Serotonin's comment, you can also buy a product containing L-cartinine, which aids in fat loss as well.

    To sum up everyone's posts, make sure your diet is in check and you're getting plenty of uninterpreted sleep each night. Start weight lifting in addition to cardio. Talk to a trainer at a gym and ask them for advice as well.

    What are your current stats? How active are you currently? What does your diet look like atm? Do you have access to a gym? How motivated are you?

    If you are planning to burn some fats at the same time build up some muscle, you can do cardio on 1 day and weight-lifting on another day. Try not to mix it up together.

    On-top of what everyone else said, do your cardio 15min after your muscle workout. Apparently it's the best way to drop body fat percentage. After you workout make sure you re hydrate yourself and jump on the treadmill!

    Swimming, hands down. Go to a big pool and swim laps. Look it up, nothing else even really compares.

    Even though he hasnt been checking the thread it still helped me out a lot :p. im in the same situation, trying to lose about 1 inch of fat all around my stomach area. Any more tips or different suggestions would be appreciated. I dont have access to a gym, so anything at home would be exceptional. Thanks

    To OP, swimming is the best and most rewarding cardio exercise that gains muscle as well
    You're pretty much working every single part of your body, have you ever seen an olympic swimmer with small arms?
    Running barefoot and swimming (especially in the ocean) are the two best ways to burn fat and get fit.
    I used to surf so I'd be out in the waves a lot, you get pretty buff when you have to fight it a lot :)

    Although this thread is fairly old, I'd still like to post for those who might also want a few tips regarding this topic.

    The BEST (In my Opinion) way to burn fat, I'd say is HIIT. That'd be, High Intense Interval Training.

    Most effective ways to perform this type of training is either on a treadmill or stationary bike.
    This work out should go for approximately 30mins for it really kick in.
    To perform this, begin jogging for 1minute, then sprint for 30secs, drop back down to jogging for 1minute, then sprint again for 30secs. Repeat that till you hit 30mins.
    By then, your heart rate should be hitting the roof and your metabolism is gonna sky rocket. Successfully completing this kind of workout will get your excess skin/fat leaking off your body. For fast results, perform this workout 3 times a week on alternate days taking breaks in between days.
