    Server Issues
    Botnet owners can charge any amount they want. I think it's per amount of time. I doubt it goes anything under $20/hr so it's actually expensive even for a day.

    There's also people that buy many tiny VPS (which have higher bandwidth than a normal home user) to attack sites.

    There are many approaches, any is expensive, and stupid, because in the end, the site wil. be back up.

    Its not possible to blanket protect against DDoS attacks no matter how much you spend. The problem is with the way the internet is structured. By definition there are always billions more clients than servers. If even 1% of the clients were to attack any server or datacenter, there is nothing they could do to prevent it. The best they could do is compile a list of attacking IPs and null route them upstream, but this list would be so long that most routers wouldn't have memory enough for it in their routing tables.

    Richard - Have you ever considered finding out who is having your site DDoSed? I know there's a lot of banned users on here who would, but if you did ever manage to find out, would you take legal action against them or something?

    Probably unrelated to attack. Got an email about an hour before I woke up saying one of the servers had experienced a kernel panic. Looks to be up now though. Hopefully things will get back to normal now.

    I just noticed (I don't know for how long this has been) that main IP A record is 1 min TTL and it's currently at DDHS proxy server.

    I hope things work smooth now :)
