These kinds of accidents happen all too often because people are fairly careless and forget gun safety in the simplest forms.

I don't think the entire problem is the guns, but the idiots who use these guns. My dad collects guns and actually has a collection of them. He never keeps these guns in the house, but at my grandmothers house. [he doesn't think I know where he keeps them] I don't know the full logistics behind this, but do gun owners in every state have a Gun permit or a certificate of some sort that shows a person can own a gun? I personally want to see stricter regulations on firearms and they should do background checks on the people purchasing these firearms..

We need to do something to stop these accidents from happening. I think stricter gun control laws are the solution.

Pure stupidity, I don't know what courses are like in the states but in Canada (Ontario) you are always taught to pull the action back before and after use of the firearm to check the chamber for an unspent round. Simple action that to me is completely habitual that would have saved his son's life. Secondly when selling a firearm NO REASON to have it loaded same with transporting magazine and firearm should be separated so these things don't happen.

Did you even read the post? Or are you just trying to be a post whore?

Stricter gun control has nothing to do with what happened here. It's not like a criminal shot and killed someone, even though gun control wouldn't prevent someone getting their hands on a gun illegally.

The guy forgot to put his safety on or thought it was on, probably fumbled with storing the gun and it went off. It's not like he meant to shoot and kill his son. It was a complete accident. Gun control isn't even meant to stop stuff like this from happening. It could happen to the most verified, decorated, highly qualified person that applies and has a permit to own and carry a weapon. Hell, it even happens in the military. It's a common mistake that can be stopped by double checking that the safety is on and that the clip is empty.

You must be a complete idiot to think that, please read the thread and think before you post something as stupid as that. And if you don't have any common sense or logic, then just don't post.

At least the father has guns he can use to commit suicide after he falls into spiraling depression.

No, he is totally right. The issue here is that America has such a ridiculously casual, overly-familiar relationship with guns. If people weren't so comfortable with firearms then accidents like this would be far less common. What kind of moron wanders around with a gun that they haven't checked isn't loaded, without the safety on, especially when there are children present. Bearing in mind that we have just had to deal with the Connecticut shootings, do you not think that now would be a sensible for time for people to be exercising at least a minisucle degree of caution when handling a gun? The fact that this guy clearly wasn't being careful just proves how dangerous the relationship between the average American gun owner and their weapons is.

You're right, gun control isn't supposed to stop this kind of thing happening. But if you promote a responsible, safety-conscious attitude towards firearms by tightening laws up then you'll see a lot less problems.

This is precisely why the rest of the world is so frustrated by all the shootings in America. Certain people just have a total inability to see the knock-on effect that gun control laws have. If you don't give someone the opportunity to own a firearm then they're far less likely to do something stupid like this and end up killing an innocent child.

You can argue about that all you like, but the bottom line is that there is a very obvious reason why America has such an issue with gun-deaths.

    Anyway, on topic:

How utterly tragic, what a waste of an innocent kid's life. I really hope this makes people open their eyes and realise that something needs to happen about guns sooner rather than later. I really don't know how the kids father is going to live with this, he must feel absolutely terrible. :(

Horrific for all involved. How is that man going to live the rest of his life knowing that he killed his own child, accidentally or not?

Wouldn't be surprised if in 18 months he's on the news for taking his own life for not being able to come to terms with it.

I strongly agree. Anyone who owns a firearm should always know to check the chamber and should always know never to point it towards anything you don't want to shoot even if it isn't loaded. That is the basics of gun safety, and when you let those slip you get accidents like these. To your second point I also strongly agree. You should never transport a loaded firearm - are you expecting to get into a shoot out while driving down the freeway?

Sad but its the fathers fault completely, not much more to say. You'd have to be pretty stupid to forget that you have a loaded gun, let alone pointing a gun (loaded or unloaded) at someone. If only the gun shop bought this moron's guns.

You should really pay more attention then.

Not like child deaths are suddenly more common because more people are suddenly covering them.

first it starts with mass shootings, then everybody reports on mass shooting. Then, children get killed... now everybody reports on children getting killed...

These things happen all the time and go unreported.. It's only when us consumers have a taste for it that the media covers it to increase ratings... Do you know how many people watched the news all day crying about that shit? Tons.
