will be building another computer in the future, and I have a decision to make

    144HZ 1080P

    4K 60HZ

I used to play comp tf2 and the refresh rate made a difference but it doesnt really in runescape, only a slight difference. However i have seen some 4K scaling and it is quite ridiculous. please bare in mind the 4k monitor is also more in general.
which one would you go for, and is 4k playable? how close can you zoom into your character?

    cheers Oli

If you're only buying a 4K monitor just for RuneScape, then no I wouldn't do it.

But if you're playing other things as well, then yes. But only if your system can handle it.

I've always gone TN panels just because I like having higher refresh rates rather than ridiculous resolutions that my system can barely handle anyways.

I personally have a 1440P monitor running at 144hz, I would go for that. 4K is really unnecessary and it's not even supported that well yet. If you don't want a 1440P monitor, and only want to choose between the two options you listed above, I'd go for the 1080 option.

This is fair. 1440p is usually the sweet spot these days. Especially now when newer and better graphics cards coming out 1440p is becoming the new normal 1080p for gaming.

OP, if you can I'd either recommend the 1080p or 1440p if that's in your interest as well.

yeah i was thinking about this.
    3 answers to that

Firstly, i'm sure the system will be able to handle it, haven't heard much but will probably get this 1070 card coming out from nvidia, i had the 970 and that was fine. I will have to do some research but it would probably be built with an i5 6600k or newer and a 1070, which should easily run runescape 4K

Secondly the setup would also be for videos, editing gopro (from Mountain biking) photography and that, and many other things. I have never experienced 4K and when i got my 1080P i was really surprised of the quality (had an asus vg248qe or whatever) so 4K would probably blow my mind (hopefully)

thirdly, although I like the idea of 1440P, it seems like a cop out to me. I won't be doing much more gaming, and if i would i would get the 144HZ 1080P but i doubt it. However, 1440P 144HZ is the dream, but they are like double the price of a cheap (but good quality) 4K screen so that is out of the window for me.
Furthermore, I feel that 1440P is halfway to 4k (literally) but i don't see the point as I may as well go full 4K. in fact the prices are pretty much the same so this is my main concern.

Also, anyone with a 4K monitor, how is RS in 4k? I saw some people having problems with zooming in, but it would seem that now this is possible. I love the idea of a massive free space, and also the controllability (downsizing to 1080P if needs be)

yeah i realise that, i just like the idea of future proofing. I could get used to everything being smaller (I think) but i don't know if i will go for 4K, may have a look at 1440P in a minute to see what kind of panels are around as i see what you say. So 1440P for runescape would also look very good but can easily still be read (sorry that was shit can you still read forums etc easily?) cheers

In the world of PC tech, nothing is ever future proofed. Don't worry, I've spent a lot of money on computers to understand that by now. Once you buy something, it's already outdated within a year.

1440p is the sweet spot man. If you're looking for something that is amazing to look at, pretty reasonably priced considering it's reputation, plus the fact that it's fast and provides great resolution, and all pact within a fast panel, check out the ROG Swift IPS monitor, which is what I use as my main panel.

A panel like this is great for everything. 1. Above the standard and normal 1080p 2. Has G Sync built into it. Which means you'll be getting smooth gameplay no matter what hardware you have as the chip inside the monitor will scale to your GPU. 3. IPS panel, so it's colours are vibrant, and great for photo editing and video editing etc. 4. Fast refresh rate up to like 165Hz if I'm correct.

If you match a monitor like this with a card like the new 1070 coming out, you'll have a monster of a setup. That card will chew threw graphics man, and all bundled with a fast, but always smooth gameplay experience with a monitor like the ROG Swift. It's better to spend money on a monitor like this, rather than pay your arm, leg, and possibly your left kidney for a gimmicky 4K monitor that is just still in this day and age, way to much for most peoples setups. Unless you're running like 2 titan X's or something then yes. But even then, some games push them cards to their limits in 4K, and most don't even get above 60 fps.

Whilst i really like that monitor, it is out of the question sadly. Not because of what it is, it is clearly the best monitor out there right now, but simply because of the price. it is around £700 in the UK and i can get a 28" AOC 4K monitor for around £270. I know refresh rates will be lower, and it will be a TN panel but the price is too much sadly. I would love a monitor like that though.

As for 1440P monitors, i reckon this is the way to go. However I'm thinking 60HZ, IPS 1440P. I will have a look and get some links

ok so, after only a small amount of looking around i saw this:

    https://www.scan.co.uk/products/25-...m_medium=cpc&gclid=CMy3goa43MwCFQ4TGwodYrQG4g

there are obviously others like this, but i like the stand on this one. this is £255, which is only 25 quid less than a 4k monitor such as this one:
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01B9JZ...m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1GZZ8W0TN8TTF24HPAG8

I know the 4K monitor is TN there, but herein lies the problem. You keep referring to 1440P being the budget alternative etc, but there is literally no price gap. this is why i am not sure. It's a bit like trying to get the most for your money, I like the idea of getting the most. what would you do concerning this?

I ordered a 4k monitor a few weeks ago, Only thing that i see worth it is that you can have alot of shit open on the screen, such as chatbox, runemetrics, abilities, friends, a huge map etc. If you do not have another monitor as it is, get 2 1080p instead. It's more usefull than one 4k. Also games like Leage is "harder" the cursor gets so small you loose it in teamfights :[

I have a decent rig, and I find 1440p gaming to be the sweet spot for myself. I'd delve into 4K but honestly, I just can't see myself dumping $1000+ on a video card to do it.
