Interactive Tour When a New Member Joins

I feel like we can reduce scams by a lot if people are given a small interactive tour when they first join. I don't know much about coding and therefore I don't know how much time this would take, but when a new member first joins, they could complete tasks that the interactive tour has stored for them. Give them an introduction to the different markets and then an introduction to community sections. Most importantly, let them know about vouches and how it's an indicator of trust. Give them information about getting PM's before a trade and about common impostor scams. Maybe even introduce them to the staff team. I feel that new users are so easily scammed because they simply don't know about the website and how it operates. This entire virtual tour would take around 5-10 minutes max and would yield great benefits when thinking about how many new members it would impact in reducing scams.

A lot of new members seem to join the website, get scammed, and then never login in ever again. If Sythe's main goal as of the moment is to attract new members to stay with the website, we need to take steps to reduce scams and this would be a great way to do this.

@Syed @SuF Is there any way to implement some form of video tutorial/ virtual tour? for newcomers to see upon arrival.


@Gracious @Tyler Perhaps if/when PR gets a video creator, you guys can create a video of all the important things that should be looked at.

@Admires something like this.. or just a virtual tour, I don't know if the virtual tour is possible unless through a video.

 

I'm not sure if it's possible with Xenforo, but when you join a website like Twitter, there's a small virtual tour telling you how everything works. I was thinking if it's possible with Xenforo, it would be a large benefit to the long term health of the website. If this is not possible a video would work that newcomers would have to watch before entering the forum.

I'm sure everyone sees how large portions of newcomers get scammed instantly when joining and then never touch this website again. The tour could mitigate this.

 

This is ultimately only something @Matthew or @Sythe could answer, however I personally do find it a nice idea if it does end up going through.

 

I was already thinking of building an addon that shows the site's security features and encourages users to enable 2FA. Adding a tutorial video isn't a bad idea as long as it's easy to hide. This isn't hard to implement. Support for this one.

 

I support this tbh. Could be innovative for all new members.

Totally cool idea. I recently joined and have found it hard to adapt to the community. although I really feel some work needs to be done in terms of welcoming new users. Maybe this could be by checking mac addresses? not sure if that's possible.

You are treat as a scammer from day one. It's also apparently encouraged that new players are reported.

I know some people aren't genuine folk - but a quick tour rather than having to ask some members of this community who aren't very nice would help. I had to figure a lot out on my own and still worry that I may be scammed.

This isn't a museum. At most, we need to make the FAQ sticky more visible. The support center is far beneath the market and rarely visited.

 

Can we link it to users upon account creation?

I know most people will just ignore it but it might be of some use

 

I feel a video would do much more justice. If the FAQ were made into a video that was forced upon newcomers I guarantee scams would dramatically decrease with newcomers. The only reason newcomers are large victims of scams is because they literally don't know what vouches or middlemen may be.

 

@Sythe is it possible to send new users a PM when they register? We wrote one up (well I think @Roary did) a long time ago but it wasn't really possible to do with vb.

 

The only issue with FAQ's is that people rarely read them unless they are linked to buying an expensive product service.

FAQ's receive as much attention as the hundreds of pages of size 8 font you're supposed to read before clicking 'accept'

I feel as though a majority of new users would close the video and never think about it again. It's a good concept, just not sure it'd be very efficient.

 

same can be said for stickies unfortunately.

I personally think a video is a better way to get peoples attentions. I have a better photographic memory then word processing mind.
Even though I still read through multiple stickys when I joined, because this place is so confusing that you just have to if you actually care.

 

Or maybe we could just highlight forum sections that would be useful to new users.

 

Half the new users that join have already had an account before anyways so I really don't see the point.
