Summary - "Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay him but the he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash."
The movie has everything, drama, action, thrill, suspense.
If you haven't seen it i suggest you do, along with Safe House (not a Gangster film) but Mr Washington plays a badass.
Just watched Casino for the first time ever.. amazing! It was so good.
By the way another great movie is 'Blow' pretty similar to the others, less violence though and more about drugs.
Yeah Casino is such a gem, I am so glad I rented that movie when I did or I probably never would have found it
Blow is also one of my all time favourite movies. It is less about gangsterism than it is about drug smuggling, but Johnny Depp is fantastic in that film and it is VERY interesting as it is based on the real tale of George Jung and the explosive cocaine industry back in the 80's. Highly recommended in the rare case that somebody hasn't seen it!

This movie sounds really cool, thanks for the details description! I will check this film out
I found a really cool movie on Netflix last night that Dimethyl recommended in a previous thread about prison movies. It is mostly about prison, but also heavily themed on gangsterism. The film is called "A Prophet", and is about a young half-Arab, half-Corsican boy who is sent to a french prison at 19 and slowly rises through the ranks of a large criminal organization, the Corsicans, that dominates the prison and the streets outside. The film is quite long, and is raw and brutal. Very, very cool film if you like anything to do with gangsterism and/or prison:
Downloading Mesrine 1 right now and planning on watching Sin Nombre this afternoon. Stoked!
Let me know what you think.
Also if you like City of God, check out Elite Squad, which is by the same writer. There are 2 films. It's about BOPE, which is the special forces military police unit in Rio de Janeiro. I love Brazilian films.
Along with Sin Nombre, I watched both Mesrine 1 and 2 yesterday and they were so good! Thanks for suggestion
I will check out Elite Squad for sure, it sounds really interesting. I love the Brazillian style films too, I don't I'd ever seen any before until City Of God/City Of Men.
The City od God. When I watched this film I had a feeling as if I watch a documentary, based on true story. He tells about the life of this little boy, and takes us a few years of his life in the slums of Rio. Tells us about the boy's dream to be a photographer and do not participate in gangs. The best.
City of God - A very sad film that follows the lives of a bunch of Brazilian children who run a gang in the streets of Rio De Janeiro. They live a life of poverty, crime, and violence, motivated by greed and their eagerness to rise above the life of poverty that they have been subjected to. A very gritty film and probably very different than many films you have seen before. This film is remarkable, and if you enjoy it as much as I did then you will be interested in the sequel, City of Men, that follows two best friends who are raised in Rio De Janeiro and whose relationship begins to crumble as they travel very different paths in their lives. Just as good as the first.
awesome foreign movie. i haven't seen city of men yet, so im gonna check that out now.
L.A. Confidential and The Usual Suspects are must-sees if you like those types of movies
Usual Suspects is a classic favourite- definitely a must see!

Denzel was pretty damn convincing as a gangster- and the guy who played the cop (can't remember his name) was perfect. The modern film style on such a classic era was one of kind.

Gran Torino is on a whole other level. That movie left me with my jaw on the ground- Eastwood's still got it!

Awesome movie! Big fan of JD and the work he does. If you haven't seen this movie yet, I'd advise checking it out.
Well, I didnt read any other posts on this thread, so IDK what has already been suggested or not, I'm just here to tell you a few.
The best in my opinion in order is:
1. Scarface
2. All the Godfather movies.
3. Smokin Aces (1 &2 both!)
Smokin aces isnt really a "mafia/gangster" movie. But it is about organized hitmen after a single target and fighting each other, the police and the target's bodygaurd(s) to kill him. Worth a watch, but smokin aces 2 takes place BEFORE the first one, and as I like a good timeline, I would suggest watching the 2nd one THEN the first one.
EDIT: I have now skimmed thru the other posts and found one with great movies! I also suggest these:
