Kid brings moms crack pipe to show and tell

The task for the fresh-faced kindergarten students was to bring important family items for show and tell.
But one kindergartner floored his teacher and local law enforcement officers when police say he pulled his mother's crack pipe and an ounce of drugs from his backpack.
The child's mother was charged with possession of a controlled substance and one count of first-degree child endangerment. Bond was set at $7,500 for 32-year-old Michelle Marie Cheatham.
A family friend at Cheatham's home told KCTV5 that the boy is now being cared for by loved ones.

Sweet Springs Elementary School officials contacted police on Sept. 6 about 8:30 a.m. Superintendent Donna Wright told police that students had been asked to bring "pictures of their family for show and tell," according to court documents.
The teacher told police that the boy produced for his "show-and-tell" family items the pipe and "several baggies of ... rocks," according to court records. The rocks tested positive for methamphetamine. Altogether, the drugs totaled about an ounce and were worth about $3,700, officials said Monday.
A search warrant was executed at Cheatham's home, and a police dog named Boomer found a crack pipe, according to court records. Charges were filed Sept. 12.

Police Chief Richard Downing told KCTV5 Monday that a child bringing drugs to show and tell was a first for his law enforcement career.
"When I called the prosecutor about it, they said, 'You're kidding me, aren't you?'"
The circumstances of the arrest also flabbergasted neighbors.
"That kind of makes you wonder why parents would leave something like that out for a child to get a hold of," one resident said.
A source close to the investigation said Cheatham's life began spiraling out of control after her husband died earlier this year in a car crash and she received a sizable military pension.
Cheatham posted bail, officials said Monday night. She is now in the hospital after experiencing complications from a previous gastrointestinal surgery, the family friend said.
Sweet Springs Principal Kelsey Kearns issued a letter to parents on Tuesday.
Kearns said the drugs were discovered when the child was unpacking his backpack in a hallway.
"These items were never brought into the child's classroom," Kearns said. "To the best of our knowledge, the students never came in contact with the substance."
Kearns said parents were not notified about the incident because of the pending investigation.

This is just hilarious.

 

Good stuff, it's a shame the kid didn't take it out during Show and Tell and show the class how to use it.

That's a shame, the mom should have at least hidden it somewhere.

 

I don't see what's so funny about a kid bringing a crack pipe and crack rocks to school. Imaging if he ate them, or tried to do something with the pipe. People think these things are funny, but they really aren't. Posting a story like this is great, but don't laugh at the fact that a 5 - 6 year old kid brought drugs to school. This could have turned out way different.

 

It's a horrible situation for the child, but I can't help but laugh when the sniffer dogs name was included in the article.

It seems like such a tender issue, the mothers husband (and child's father) dying while the mother was in the army, only for her to become dependent on drugs.

Maybe this is the wake up she needs.
Or maybe it's the final straw.

I really laughed at this. Pretty pathetic that the mom has drugs worth 3700 lying around where her 5 year old could pick it up and take it to school.

 

Each time a little piece of my faith in humans is restored, I hear about or witness something that tears it away. Her husband died, so what? Does that give her an excuse to use crack? No. Plenty of widows get by without drugs. Was she ever even thinking about her child's life at all? Chances are that she wasn't if she's selfish enough to waste large amounts of money on something that has the potential to further destroy her child's life.

Care to elaborate? Do you think it's right to use crack? Does your husband dying justify submitting yourself to an addiction that not only affects you, but the life of a child, your child, one that's already had a rough life?

 

You understand that around a third of the time on an army base is free time. Opiates are legal and encouraged over there. There's three things to do: Get high, clean your gun, or clean your gun.

Her husband died in a car accident and she was mentally and physically addicted to a drug. What happens now? Cold turkey off opiates? Nice joke.

I never once stated she should just quit altogether, or stop immediately and go cold turkey, I implied she should at least be trying. Which she obviously wasn't if there was nearly four grand worth of crack just laying around. AND it was obviously accessible to her child.

The kid lost his father, this would be traumatic for most children, am I not to assume it was rough on him? And his mother was obviously battling an addiction, which I assume, rightfully so, may have meant further problems at home.

So, you consider me a horrible person because I think a mother should care for her child. I can honestly say your opinion of me doesn't really mean fuck all. You're a forum poster defending a crack head who endangers her kindergarten child.

The fact that she's doing drugs is her own business. But the fact that it was in the area that a small child could find and bring it just shows that she either wasn't thinking, or made a bad decision, like "xx Sean" said.
