Is selling stuff on RuneScape unsafe?

Right before quitting last year I sold my two party hat sets for 700 million gp and successfully traded those gp for $7000 usd...

Why are party hats worth so much more these days (fucking 500% inflation?!!), while the rate at which gold and money is traded has stayed relatively stagnant? Overspeculation? Or just the fact that RuneScape has imposed more stringent rules on real-world trading (thus diminishing the number of sellers)?

I'm kicking myself in the head right now, wondering why I didn't just hold on to them.

 

Well they became rare'er and rare'er because more people started buying mills and the demand got higher for these items.

They cost more than before because they can only get rarer. There will never be more, only less. The less of an item, the more it's going to cost.

 

LOL. Mills only sell for $5 max nowadays... so in the end, it's all good.

 

Your topic name and your discussion are two different things. Is selling items unsafe on Runescape, yes and no, there will always be the risk of getting banned, that's the worst they can do.

To answer your message in your thread, they will keep rising, and rising, till they get so high no one can buy them, then they will slowly get lower and lower, and they will repeat that cycle.

 

I PMed you with what i think to be accurate, The issue isn't inflation, it is merchants raising their prices, and buyers have no choice but to go along with it, a GREAT example is robin set, it rose 4m in last 2 days, all the merchants refuse to go lower. And the rarer they get, the higher they go, EX: Everytime someone quits for a long time, with rares in bank, prices will go up.

Rare items get more expensive in RS of two reasons, the fact that they are rare and there is a limited number of them in the game and that they are the main type of item that absorbed all the inflation in the RS market (caused by so much gp being brought into the game by players). As for the price of mils, they generally drop as over time somewhat accomidating the increase in price of rares.

 

i don't know how much p hat sets sell for nowadays, but i used to sell mills when they went for 10-12$ per. I'm sure p hat set prices have inflated more than 200%

 

More money can always be brought in,but a party hat shall only be traded by players.

This is how the prices raise. I bought 1 phat set yesterday and dropped them all in the wild. In the lowest populated world. That is how prices go up. I am goign to keep 1 of my phat sets and buy more and drop. Then I will be the only with phats and prices will skyrocket!

 

On the brightside as the cost of P-hats went up the price of Mils went down... So your 7,00 dars coud infact by you ay twice s many mils now and you cld perhaps get back some of your Phats... or just a shitload of gps


however i believe party hats are due for a fall sometime soon. however they do kleep getting rarer as more players start to play RS and more quit that do not realise they can sell their rsgps on sites like this and leave ahts on stagnant accounts. But never the less they should become slightly cheaper soon. cant keep going up its like the Australian residential markets. they are skyrocketing but starting to plateau. i believe phats wail reach their plateau soon.

It has nothing to do with merchants raising prices on their own, its a matter of supply and demand.

Robin sets originally started going up because there are too many damn pures nowadays who want to look good, and people arent producing enough sets to supply that demand. They shot up even more when a rumor was spread that robin sets were becoming discontinued, then they shot down because Mod Burgess posted in the Treasure Trail forum that the rumor was wrong.

Dorito pretty much had it right when he commented on the cycle of rares. There is a set amount, and the rares start off at a set price. Then someone decides to pay an extra 200k for a mask because he really wants them and there is only a set amount of them so he knows they will go up. They're only worth a lot because people think they are. Eventually people stop buying the rares for higher prices though, just because noone can afford them, and everyone with rares gets scared because noone wants their rares anymore, and they start selling for less and less. Once people realize that rares are going down, they save up and try to buy one on the theory that it will go up again, and the cycle repeats itself.

 

Mills are down 300% from a while ago.....I sold over 100m for $1400. Mills were $14 ea back then

 

To take away $7000 USD in pure profit from 2 Phat Sets is nothing to be complaining about.
