Could you live on a different planet?

I was on facebook when I came across a Yahoo post that stated in 2022 people are going to go to Mars, Problem is they will never return. Could you just up and leave your life, family, and friends too pursue a dream and go down in history? I personally couldn't and have a hard time just thinking about what I would do. What are your thoughts? Link is down below.

Living there would be unnatural. I'd rather not change my lifestyle to accommodate the temperature, and vast amounts of carbon dioxide that the planet provides.

Depends on the context. Suppose I were to live in a time where space exploration is viable and there are sophisticated colonies on other habitable planets. I could probably pack up and leave for them with no real bother if I wanted to. More primitive colonies such as what would be suggested on Mars would be debatable though, considering a lot of my life is spent on the internet so I'd be suffering without it, haha.

I'm the kind of person who tends to value learning and experience over more sentimental things, so I'd be more keen to experience and understand what is out there over things like country and kin.

Exactly what would you do on Mars though? I mean like, it would cool for all of about 30 seconds before you get bored of red dust...

I would guess a person wouldn't actually have a choice. It may be limited to specific professions and perhaps only to those that may have no more than 2 children.

No, I couldn't. I'm far to sentimental to leave behind my friends, family, home.

Ya know this is a really tough question...Its 2014 right now, they're planning for 2024. 10 years is a lot of god damn time for ANYTHING to happen. That being said as of right now...today I could say I am willing to take a 1 way trip to Mars, but it would be a serious shame if I volunteered, got accepted and some big life changing event happened to me...Like the love of my life finds her way to me etc. . .

Today I could live on another planet...but tomorrow I don't know.

Space travel has never had a "safety guarantee." Even before the Challenger explosion, astronauts (in the US) had to sign a waiver saying they accept all risk and would not hold NASA responsible for anything that went wrong.

With that said, there are always issues. Like when we tried to land a rover and the output of the thrusters was in pounds (Lbs) and the input from the rover's computer was in Newtons (N). This caused a crash landing worth ~$10B.

I however would not be able to partake in such a thing. Leaving this planet behind would be too much for me.

I think they will make it, but one of em is going to go crazy and kill the others.

I would partially agree. Someone is bound to go stir crazy to insane and start randomly offing people. However, I believe if it is set up the way I think it should, by process of acceptance/elimination regarding professions, the success rate should be fairly high.

But in all honesty, they could hand pick these candidates and put them through intense evaluations, physical tests, mental capacity and say they turn out a 99.9% predicted success rate. Well they still can't predict what will happen once they are up there, or if someone will have a mental breakdown, or say someone gets sick.

Honestly, Whatever they claim won't matter because there will always be a unknown when trying something new.

This was the point I was making. The success rate will still be high regardless of what extensive testing/evaluation one may put through a person. Oftentimes, even these "protective measures" aren't even 99% accurate because you're dealing with the unknown as well.

Could you live on a different planet?

I wouldn't since its not a dream of mine.

If it was I would certainly go for it. To get to fulfill that dream is something you shouldn't let go. Its like colonizing on earth but on a greater scale. Sounds like family is holding people back from a big break but back then people left everything behind in order to do what they wanted

There are always going to be risks and sacrifices to achieve a goal

Could you live on a different planet?

I could live on a different planet provided there's enough people there. I wouldn't go live in a colony of like 50 people... I'd need a few thousand with plenty of trained specialists in field such as medicine, engineering, and education to feel comfortable enough with going.

But when it came down to it, I doubt I could leave nature behind.

Could you live on a different planet?

This is essentially my thoughts. If I had to, I would. But for now I would choose not to until it was built up (towns, etc).

Also, all in all I don't really care if I go down in history. I would be much happier to just live a full and happy life.
