For those of you who don't know, DBAN is a disk utiliy that stands for Darik's Boot and Nuke, which is exactly what it does. You pop in the CD, Boot off it, and can wipe the HDD in any manner of ways

My dad just bought a new computer, and in order to get a $100 rebate, he has to send the old computer to them - Now, we just dug up some POS that barely met the requirements, so I don't care about it at all - I only want to DBAN it so some creep at the recycling facility doesn't creep.

So I pop the CD in and boot up the computer to the CD drive, and the computer goes into a black screen with a white cursor in the top left of the screen. How do I get around this to nuke my HDD?
I've looked around some and found that many people have had this issue AFTER they nuked their hard drive, which is understandable, since they nuked it. This, however, is BEFORE I nuked it.

So, basically I want either to
Find a way to make DBAN work or
Find an effective alternative to DBAN that doesn't involve a large amount of work on my part

Is there a chance you didn't burn it properly? You should have selected the lowest write speed. I've made that mistake many times.

Sounds like it's trying to boot from the hard drive still? Make sure your boot order is set to boot from the CD first. If it is, make sure you have burned the disc properly the the ^^ above poster stated.

Usually when you boot DBAN, all you have to do is type is "autonuke" at the prompt and hit enter, and it will write the disc with 0's.

Try going into your BIOS menu and boot from CD drive. F12?

Make sure your CD has been burned properly.

If you want maximum security for the nuke, run a Gutman Wipe which will nuke your HDD 35 times.

Go into BIOS and change boot sequence with your CDROM at top.

If for some reason it just doesn't work try:

    - Killdisk
    - Ghost wipe

I've figured it out. My mom only bothered to tell me the computer's CD drive is broken 10 minutes ago >.< , but now I've put it on an old flashdrive and it's going fine.
