An idea of why they're bringing it back...

I think I know why they might be doing this. You see, they're releasing their brand new MMORPG called; "Stellar Dawn" sometime 2011. They are bringing the wilderness and free trade back in an attempt to milk what is left of the cash cow we know as Runescape. They want everybody back with memberships, first of all so that they can profit, secondly so that everybody will be there for the release of Stellar Dawn, thus profiting even more. (I'm guessing Jagex assumes Runescape will eventually die after the release of Stellar Dawn.) So, I personally think that this is all a plan to milk everything out of Runescape, and end it on a good note right before they release their new cash cow.

This could all be a deliberate plan after all, it seems very logical to do.

They realized their game was going down the shit hole and wanted to bring back the only thing that made Runescape the game it was.

 

I don't think so in regards to Stellar.

Jagex are doing this to get as much subscriptions as possible and to get more traffic.

 

Money, Simple as that.
Thus the big advertisement stunt wich lets people 'vote'.

Yes I would think so as it will be virtually rendered useless. If the merchants decide not sell on the GE, and actually merchant the items for a large profit the GE will serve of no purpose, and will be removed. If trade limits are put back I strongly feel that this will be the case.

I love the GE in regards to grabbing items for quests. Don't have to stuff around going places to get shitty items. So i hope it stays in that aspect.

 

No. They are doing it because they want another world record. The record is for the most players to vote for a single event on a MMORPG site.. So, they figured. Since everyone loved PK, won't everyone vote to get it back? ... Exactlyyyy. Oh well, I don't care how we get it. We need 1.2m votes to get it back, (did the math) that's more than half of RS. Sooo, win win.

No. There's still A LOT of life left in Runescape, they're not gonna just throw it away and hope the best with an unproven MMO (stellardawn). That's like saying Blizzard will throw WoW away because of Titan... I think it is about competition, how many of you know that Lord Of The Rings Online recently became Free To Play? Now, this isn't some cheap ass game that limits you entirely, this is the real deal and it's an extremely polished game, definitely competition for Runescape. Jagex feel threatened by the guys over at Turbine, it's a different game yeah, but one of the best f2p MMOs out there next to Runescape.

The World Record thing too, that's easy promotion, they knew they would get tons of votes so they figured "why not at least try?" But it's just a small reason, getting some exposure by GBWR isn't enough to warrant such a major change all alone.

 

Doing all this just in the hopes that Stellar Dawn will succeed seems like a stretch to me.

I don't think Jagex would be willing to take such a risk - if it failed it would kill them.

Also, I think the final step to simply milking Rs for everything it's worth is to begin selling gold, status, and items to players like they do in the private servers. I like to think Jagex has still got a while to go before they stoop that low.

 

Well the vote is pointless, you can just put in any random account name and there vote is counted as if it was yours. So if the vote doesn't mean anything, it surely means they have ulterior motives.

 

It's a publicity stunt. The way they act about the poll isn't how you go about getting the real opinion of the community. There isn't even a no answer... Notice how they said to tell every one? They are trying to bring people back, their game is dieing and they need some thing like this to bring it back. I mean I'm happy because I want no limits and old wildy but you gotta remember this is just for more money for them in the end.

I agree with your theory. They're moving on from RS and don't really give a fuck anymore, so they figure they might as get a bunch of cash from old members/new botting accounts before they drop it completely.

 

I don't give a monkeys why they're doing it and I really cba doing StellarDawn (RS all the way ;D) I'm just happy if they go ahead and take it out
