Why make cars that can go 200KM/h but have the speed limit at 100...

I drive 120 max on the highway or freeway what ever you wanna call it... but my car can go 260km max. What I wanna know is why even put this feature in the car... why not make a more compact earth friendly engine that can max 120 and use the rest of the space in front of the car for more better features that people are actually going to fucking use.

Is it a male preference thing where a guy refuses to a buy car because of its speed?

Could it be people just want to see that high number 200+?

I don't understand... I hear people complain every day about high gas prices and how there car runs out fast...

Imagine if they built cars that actually could only max the speed limit how fuel efficient the car would be...

I had this conversation with a colleague of mine wanted to share it here what are your thoughts on this?

They make cars because people buy the cars, just like you bought yours. The question should be, "why do people buy these cars".

The CEO's of the companies would be voted out of their chair if they said "hey, I know that we make roughly a billion dollars in annual revenue on ridiculous gas-hogs with illegal speed capabilities, but let's ignore what the consumer wants and make cars that can only go half the speed, just for shits n giggles [or, you know, to save the planet from carbon polution]"

First of all, if you had a car that could only reach the speed limit, its acceleration would be AWFUL. I know that isn't a big issue but for people who are inner-city driving it would be.

Secondly, we have track days, race meets and the German Autobahn.

We live in a world where more is typically better. More speed, bigger sizes, and increased capacities are what people are looking for in pretty much everything they own.

No complaints here. My average fuel economy between both of my vehicles works out to about 13mpg. Both have v8s with over 6 liters displacement. With 415 & 530hp, I'm certainly not complaining. I can stretch them out on back roads, and have the power to get around anybody. There is plenty of times I can enjoy the power, and if I feel the need for excessive amounts of speed, there's always private roads and tracks.

    good point,

but where I'm from its mostly driver error that causes accidents not speed. ie talking on the phone, tail gating, falling asleep etc.

still love to put my foot down or twist the throttle to move around cars in the fast lane going way under the speed limit =]

I think the first part is probably right, I'm not so sure about racing nowadays tho.

I drive a car regularly - an old Mitsubishi Pajero - that can barely go 110km/h in 5th down the highway. Its acceleration is fine, even in inner city, and it's a manual which makes taking off and frequent stops even worse.

    Speed increase =/= acceleration increase.

Tell that to the folk that walks out from behind something else to cross whilst you're cruising a sweet 100kmph+ in a highly residential area. People that use mobiles while driving should lose their license for their complete disregard of safety of other human beings.

It would not limit the acceleration at all. They would have to rebuild the gearbox and how it works. For example you have a 2 stroke dirt bike, it can reach its top speed within 5-6 seconds and that is because it is built for it keep in mind for a 2 stroke dirt bike that is used on track the top speed is only 120-140 km/h. So for you people who say the acceleration would be slow are all wrong they woulf just have to build the engine differently.

I think people see the high speed and they think woah thats a cool car even though they can never go to that speed, which causes them to buy the car...
