Try downloading CCleaner from Piriform.com and running that. There is also a feature that allows you to choose which programs start automatically when your computer starts. Disable all the unnecessary ones. If you are unsure about a process, Google it.

You can also try removing the boot screen. This can add a second or two to your startup. Here is a guide for windows 7.

I know defragging your hard drive can boost performance, so I'd try that as well.

If you have a lot of shortcuts on your computer it drastically makes the boot up time longer. I used to have almost the whole screen full of them and after I took them all off it only took about 30 seconds to fully start up.

I'd work first with cleaning startup and temps. Afterwords give raxco's perfect disk a shot. (smart placement pwnz0rs).

It's only a 1 month trial, just install it to the desktop, do a tune up, and delete it. repeat every 2-6 weeks. (to keep optimum performance 2-3). Depending on your version of windows you're using it's known to decay so the more frequently you keep it tuned the better.

Also it can't hurt to comb your registry/DLinks as they can both cause horrific retardation in performance.
