Why do Gold sites ask for ID?

Back in the day when I used to buy gold off the chinese. Whenever I purchased atleast 100m+ they asked for ID. Why is that?

- Are they trying to ID theft you?

 

well 1. its never a good thing to just throw your ID around.

but the whole point they ask for ID is so if there is a chargeback they have proof that it is you that has given them that card info and such.

 

Proof that you are the Paypal account owner.

 

Because if you chargeback the funds, not only do they have proof that you payed them, they delivered as promised, but also that you stated, and have enough proof to say who you are (Credit card holder). If they can, they could probabaly take you to court o.o

 

To avoid getting a phone call from them spend 20 or less. To avoid them asking for iD spend less then 50. What i do is i buy a prepaid cc and makd 2 purchases to avoid this. Hope this helps

 

It helps them to prove you own the paypal account, but paypal could categorically not give a shit as it doesn't deal with virtual disputes based on the facts, just based on who complains first.

Some of the sites may be misinformed, others may be selling and/or using your information maliciously. I wouldn't give my ID to anyone I didn't know personally or trust a lot.

 

Security reasons. To make sure you're not using a fake paypal and that if you chargeback, they can provide enough evidence to win the case.
