Why do black people call each other ''Nigger''?

Always wanted to know why black people call them self & other black people ''Nigger'' My girlfriend is from the Caribean yet she finds the word disgusting who ever say's it, claiming it is from slave day's and that black people who say that word are disrespectful, I said it as a ''joke'' listening to some rap music the other night and she did not take it good.
(I am not a racist) It was a rap song.

If anyone could tell me why? i would like to know

 

Simply can.
It's been implemented in their vocabulary.
It can be seen as a sign as brothership, "Sup Nigga"
Or Degrading, "You ain't nothing BitchNigga, "You Scum nigga, "Too much gunk on your teeth nigga."

It has become slang
And after all the segregation it is felt as theirs.
And rightfully so.

I don't have too many white friends, but no one is different, you build a relationship with anyone and the feelings will be mutual, so if you're white and you say it, it doesn't mean anything when you build respect between eachother.

 

I'll never understand this. Maybe it's just because I'm white. Me and my friends don't run around screaming, "Hey, Cracker!" at one another. I just find it hypocritical when they call one another nigger. If the word is derogatory when one race uses it, it should be so for every race. It doesn't lose meaning just because your skin color changes.

 

People usually don't go up and say "Nigger", they say Nigga. They sorta have 2 different meanings, hard to explain

 

If i was to say that in my local town i will start a race war, Evan for me to say to another white person, Whitey or Cracker White bastard Etc.. that would be classed as racism, Could it be defined as racism if one black person didn't want to be called the N word by another black person you may say it in various way's but the word must be offensive to some & not to others.

I am a lighthearted person and take the piss out of my girlfriend and she does the same back to me, we joke all the time and don't usually take things to heart.

 

I'm Black so let me explain. Nigger is the derogatory meaning which means Ignorant. Nigga which is a common word used by Not only Blacks but Whites, Asians and Spanish means Brotherhood, And Friend. Simple as that.

 

So if I called you my nigga, you'd be cool with that? Even with me being as white as white gets. What if I called you my nigga after knowing and being your friend a couple years?

 

If I knew you I wouldn't care. But if I didn't know you then I'm going to take offense to it.

 

That's like saying why do Australians call each other mate?
Why do lots of people say, 'bro'

It's part of their language, and it's a recognized informal way of greeting people; nothing more.

 

The term "Nigger" is still offensive to many people, but they have a knock-off of the word which everyone uses "Nigga". The word "Nigga" is common in today's society, hell even white peeps use it quite commonly. Its the equivalent of white people saying "Whats up Bro" "Whats Up My Nigga"... For anybody to be offended by a word like this is quite absurd. Anyway I'm not sure people say the term "Nigger" Openly.

 

I couldn't say it to anybody black, even if I were best friends with them, I think it's so offensive and degrading to call somebody that, it's disgusting.

I think the double standard is ridiculous, and completely hypocritical. Black people want to be treated equally, and not be the subject of racism, but at the same they act differently and have different standards.

For example, it's okay for a black person to say nigger/nigga, but not a white person.

It's okay to say white people can't jump/dance/play basketball, but it's not okay to say black people can't get into college/pass the SAT.

For this reason, racial equality is a joke, and will never happen.

I'll make a topic about this when I'm bored and have a lot of spare time, some day.

 

I agree to a certain extent however the words ''MATE'' & ''BRO'' are used pretty much by everyone, i say mate to everybody, Evan people i have never spoke to before, they have no meaning of racial hate towards one an other or lead back to slave day's, unlike the word ''Nigga'' ''nigger'' though.

I think the most racist shit out there is that I can't use the word nigger because of the color of my skin.

 

it has the purpose of establishing ingroup solidarity
it has the purpose of giving new meaning to a historically derogatory term.
(this would be similar to ppl using the word "fag" to refer to bundles of sticks or cigarettes instead of using it in a hateful way.)

since the word "nigger" is based on the word black. now that everyone is considered equal, i would think it natural that the word "nigger" is used to express pride in ones own race.

i had a friend in high school that was nicknamed the golden jew. i dont think it was racist because we did not treat him differently based on this. we only used it as an identifier.

 

i dont think anyone knows why they call each other niggers i thought it was a word disrespecting them

why cant i walk up to a black kid and be like hay whats up my nigga ? they will be like "wtf you just say white cracker bitch ass nigga"

but two min. befor that the two black kids just walked up to each other and was like hay whats up nigga

i find it funny and dumb and i dont get it
worst of all is when i play xbox the black kids call me a nigger when i clearly am making raciest comments against them previously
