Why did RuneScape reset my username after a few years of inactivity?

Hello y’all,

As you can see, I joined the site back in 2007 which was I was most active and throughout the years purchased a few rare name accounts. This was before display names were a thing.

long story short, I haven’t signed into the accounts in a few years and now that I recently started playing again decided to give them a look. To my surprise, as soon as I logged in it asked me to select a display name even though I just logged in with my username?

it is what it is but I’m more confused than anything, was this a Jagex thing?

"Mod Jane recently had a post for HLF only that people could post on for names they wanted and she said she would "review" them and see if they could be made available. So far 4 Trimmed Compers and a guy ranked in her FC have gotten the names they wanted soooo.. Yeah."

 

There was a name release in like 2014. Inactive accounts names became available.

 

I appreciate the response. TBH I was hoping that was the case. I was worried it may have been hacking related which concerned me about my other accs etc.

Are short rare name logins worth anything nowadays?

Lastly, was this exclusive to OSRS? or did the same rules apply to RS3 as well?

 

Not sure if just logins are worth anything really. It applied to both games since display names are tied in between them two.
