    My friend, who is an atheist, has grown a disdain for the term "atheist" and now refers to himself as non-religious and agnostic.

    Thoughts and reasons for why you declare yourself an atheist?

    What exactly is there to discuss? The definition of atheist is not so broad that there could be a huge discussion about it.

    I guess Atheists tend to take a more active stance towards their non-support of religion, whereas Agnostics are passive, and do not actually invest their time in disproving religion. They are generally open towards ideas of a higher being, just not the typical fashion in which organised religion peddles it.

    Agnostic != atheism. Non-religious != atheism.

    Atheism has two clear and very similar definitions. Agnostic is much more broad and non-religious is simply massive.

    I consider myself as Agnostic but under the belief that this means I believe in the possibility of a god-like figure but put no real faith or drive behind it but I'm not totally against religion in general. Forgive me if I have been mistaken on the definition. More on topic, I don't fully understand what your asking "Why declare one's own self as an atheist now?". Are you asking why people become atheists? I suppose it's one someone has an active disagreement with religion as opposed to a more neutral stance on the matter.

    I also consider myself as Agnostic, because I believe in a higher power, but also like Mizoreofsnow stated, I put no real faith behind it, because I myself am uncertain of what's out there. (Religiously speaking)

    A guy says he can fly. He refuses to prove it though. Therefore, people call him a fake. Wouldn't you?
