Because it has been illegal for so long so it gives out a bad image. Anything illegal gives out a bad image.

Agreed. Though only now its slowly becoming legal in multiple states in America. Even then, there will always be those anti-marijuana communities.

While I'm a proponent for legalisation, that graphic is actually quite innacurate and also out of context.

First, in medical terms, a depressant is something that affects you biologically rather than psychologically. Their opposites are stimulants, such as coffee, nicotine, or cocaine. Anti-depressants are given to people with depression, so there's really no comparison between alcohol as a depressant, and weed as an anti-depressant as the two classes of drug are actually entirely unrelated.

Secondly, weed is not physically addictive, but it is psychologically addictive.

Third, you can likely attribute weed to deaths caused by things such as drug driving etc.; I know someone who's crashed their car because they were high. Just because weed has less adverse effects than alcohol doesn't mean you have a license to ignore how it affects your cognitive and fine motor skills.

Fourth: the whole "weed cures cancer" thing is not only extremely debatable, but largely unproven. The most that we have are anecdotes and the odd bit of evidence showing cannabinoids killing cancerous cells in a petrie dish. The thing is, almost anything can kill cancer in a petrie dish, so that point is moot. The smoke you inhale from smoking weed is also carcinogenic, so arguably it can be a factor in causing cancer as well.

    Grows brain cells: [citation needed].

    ---

TL;DR: don't be sucked in by pop science and quackery. Know the good and the bad of everything, and know it without bias one way or the other.

I read everything. Though I think the point of this picture is to show how weed is less harmful than alcohol, yet it remains illegal while alcohol is legal.

Be that as it may, misinformation will never help with legalisation efforts.

Probably. A lot of what the government has to say about marijuana is misinformation as well though.

Here is something taken from drugfreeworld.org

I know that it isn't a government website, but still. Can you believe people actually believe that?

As a chemical engineering major I chuckled a little. Even in vodka distillation there are additives, further not all methanol is completely boiled off due to the nature of mixed solutions and mass transfer theory.

Both sides will have spurious information. However, in order to make the best case possible for the side for which you advocate, it is best to avoid misinformation altogether so that you cannot be called out on it; it lowers your credibility.

I actually would dis-agree with this. I have been smoking weed everyday for the past year and a half. I trained myself that when smoking to do proactive things for my body.

Meaning that after i smoke, i will work out, go for a hike, actually be able to FOCUS on homework.

It is also a great stress reliever from my job and it helps with my back pain from a snowboarding accident years ago. The reason why i don't get my card (I live in CA), is because my parents are part of the older generation where weed is horrible, it will lead to other drugs, and pretty much every other untrue thing that has been forced down our throats.

Is weed a gateway drug? It is up to the user himself. I have always been satisfied with it, and haven't had a need to expand. Other people who don't have as much self-control may have a different story.

So is alcohol (ethanol), tobacco (nicotine), coffee (caffeine), sugar (which is more addictive than heroin), and prescription medication.

    What is your point?

No way. No heroin addict is going to choose sugar over heroin.

Au contraire, I think you misunderstand. Besides, it is certainly possible to have multiple addictions so what you said makes no sense.

Try giving up all added sugar in your diet and live from purely non-artificial food sources. You will go in to withdrawals so bad you'll hate living.

That's my point, someone addicted to both heroin and sugar wouldn't choose sugar if forced to pick one.

I'm not a fan of sugar. I don't eat anything that has surgar in it on a regular basis besides an ocassional chocolate bar. I don't drink anything that has sugar in it. I don't even like naturual sugar like fruits that are high in sugar like apples or grapes. I haven't ate any sugar today and I feel fine.

That doesn't change the addictive nature of the substance. Sugar addiction is not as damaging to health, certainly, but it is known to be extremely hard to give up, particularly given almost all artificial food contains added sugar.

You don't understand what added sugar is. It is anything that is added to the product during processing to produce a desired taste. Almost everything you eat will have it.

Yeah man, same. Been smoking on the daily basis for around 2 years, started working out while being under the influence (mostly 1- 1,5 hours after taking a 1-3 bong hits) around a year ago and it actually works :embar:

If sugar is more addicting then heroin wouldn't a heroin and "sugar addict" stop heroin before not eating sugar?

Why would someone be addicted to artificial sugar but not naturual sugar? Like if I got sugar free cereal and added sugar to it myself what would be the difference. Unlike heroin sugar is part of a balanced diet, and is healthy in moderation. "We actually need sugar; it's our body's preferred fuel," says David Katz, MD, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center

Jesus Christ, it's like talking to a wall.

Natural sugars ARE necessary; they're a carbon energy source that is required by our body. ADDED sugars however are NOT. We consume plenty of natural sugar just by eating what we need in a balanced diet. As for your sugar-free cereal example, that's just daft because sugar-free simply means no ADDED sugar. Non sugar-free cereal will have an absolute tonne of sugar added in the manufacturing process.
