Help on selling a high spec laptop (UK)

    Hi guys,

I'm looking to sell my M17x Alienware laptop. Originally was worth around £2,200 several years ago, and I'm leaning towards a desktop now since I don't move about much anymore.

It was top of the range when I received it, and I believe it still has very good specs (plus it's in great condition).

Unfortunately I don't know much about computer stuff (the laptop was a gift), so I'm slightly concerned about selling it on eBay or some such site (lots of scammers). My question for you guys is, where would be the best place to sell it?

There's virtually no risk selling on eBay, that being said you should try to sell it to someone in real life, since you have difficulties trusting one of the largest e-commerce websites.

you could privately list it on a local site. I'm not sure what is available in the UK, but something like Craigslist in the US would be a good place to start.

Since you mention that the laptop is several years old, it's likely not worth a whole lot. with hardware that is several generations old...it leaves a lot to be desired. best of luck with the sale, but I personally wouldn't pay more than about 600 USD for it unless it was an R4 model with a 680m, when I could buy a brand new clevo for around 1100 USD that would obliterate it in terms of performance. just a heads up.

That's actually not the case anymore. eBay instituted a required 90 day return policy recently, I believe on the 19th it took affect.

So on the 89th day after selling the buyer can claim that the item was NAD (Not as described) and 9 times out of 10 they'll win the claim.

So.... it's much more risky to sell on eBay nowadays....

I'd sell it on craigslist, meet in a public place like a police station.

eBay has an enormous amount of scammers, I've sold several types of electronic hardware on there recently and 3/5 of the buyers attempted some form of fraud.

It was top tier when I got it, so I'm hoping for a reasonable price. Lowest example with similar specs that I could find on eBay was going for £900 if I remember correctly, would be happy enough with that personally :p

Yes, as I mentioned above I've had severe problems with buyers making fraudulent claims, to the point where I've had to contact the police.

I have heard sketchy things about craigslist too though. People not turning up, mugging for items at gunpoint, paying with fake cash, etcetc. Honestly I just want to find some way to sell this and start thinking about a desktop :(

Sell it here. And like I said craigslist is safe if you have the person meet somewhere safe, IE a police station.

I'll look into craigslist I guess. I don't think too many people on Sythe will be interested in a UK expensive laptop :p

I did not know this, sorry

@ OP, I think craigslist will suit you better than anything else, if not try the local classifieds in your newspaper.
