    Which class to take?

I am wanting to get more knowledge of programming, and I saw my High School is offering some programming classes. I've narrowed them down to Java Programming, or C++/Visual Basics. In your opinion, which language is easier/more useful to learn? Thanks for your responses.

If you want to get anywhere in the industry, C++ is your best bet. But if you only want to do RuneScape stuff, learn Java instead.

Personally, I think C++/VB is a better option, but I'm bias as I don't really know Java so well.

If you plan on taking computer science in university java is usually one of the first courses you run into, before C++. So if you take it in highschool you will be fresh for university.

Thanks for the replies guys. And I'm not really planning on taking a computer related course in College, just spiked my interest in programming and wanted to get a little better at it.

I would recommend Java as your odds of getting a job are a lot higher, but since you're not going into the field, it's completely up to you.
Which is easier? They're both easy.
Which is more useful in life? Java

And I don't recommend VB. You want to learn languages that support more than just Microsoft's OS. No offense to any visual basic fans, but odds are it will never take you anywhere.

Since when? Almost every programming job I've seen advertised states C++ is required. In my country at least.

I actually see a lot of programming jobs for Java, not just C++. And I don't see why they wouldn't be everywhere, because Java is pretty much used everywhere.

Does it really matter? As a lot of the programming languages are quite similiar in many different ways. I took 1 year of VB\C++ and Now i'm in IB Computer Science and it mainly focuses on java and there are only slight differences between the languages.

Are you kidding? When you get far more advanced (i.e out of high school), you're gonna see difference. A LOT. C++ will get you places, C++ is the industry standard, C++ is the beefiest language out there. VB is not, in fact, I believe it is inferior to Python due to the fact it's not even cross-platform.

Anyways, VB is probably the simplest language out there to learn. C++ is the most useful if you want a job in programming, and communities like Sythe usually have people creating apps and scripts with Java. If you really want to start fresh, I would look up Turing. I personally do not know Turing, but it was developed at the University of Toronto, and is proven by study (I think) to help you learn more intricate and advanced languages much easier by teaching you the foundations of syntax, and the programmer mentality (put on your socks, then your shoes rather than put on your shoes and socks sort of thing). I really really recommend you try that out, and then try to tackle whatever else. Fair warning though, Turing is hardly even qualified as a language, and is more of a teaching tool; it'd be like bringing a paintball gun to a real war.
