When will Mars be Colonized?

When do you believe Mars will be colonized? It's going to happen sooner or later, more than likely by the Americans. But when? I believe it will happen within the next forty years just because technology is moving at such a rapid pace making the concept more likely every day. If the Americans colonize it first will this make it off limits to everyone else? Opinions?

 

Never. Mars can't sustain life.

 

Once we put a big force field around it that prevents the harmful rays from space (ie: Like our atmosphere), that can sustain life, and has a Greenhouse affect. Then and only then it will be colonized.

Although, not sure if I would want to live there as the Mars day is quite different from an Earth day. And honestly, what the hell would you do? Star at friggen rocks all day?

 

Neither can the moon, yet there has been people there. Colonies on Mars would most likely be in "bubbles" of artificial atmosphere, not in the open.

It's hard to say when, but I don't doubt it will happen. At least in the form of a south pole style science outpost. And I doubt America will get there first, with their current economic situation. My guesstimate is that China is more likely to get there first.

 

How is China's space program? They were the 3rd to the moon or something but I haven't really heard much since then.

 

I don't know, but it's really a question about money. Colonizing Mars is not cheap, and I can't see NASA spending that much money while America is neck-deep in debt.

Although they lost the moon race (world's biggest pissing contest), the situation has changed since the cold war.

 

I don't believe the Americans will occupy it first.

Most likely the Chinese or someone from the European Union.

Remember, in the 90's we thought flying cars would be around quite a few years ago.

 

Good point, China definitely has the funds to do it, just if they want to or do they have ideas for world domination first?

 

This is indeed true, Alterations in the current years could most likely alter it their. In several decades/centuries I don't see it becoming too harsh. Also think about the pace we are ruining our mother earth already.

 

Unless we find some reason that would financially or otherwise benefit humans as a whole...I agree with Tyro.

 

Judging by the rate our ozone layer is deteriorating, I think that we will need to move to other near by planets with a some what similar atmosphere as the Earths, the only problem is that Earth is the only planet we know of that has such a large amount of oxygen, 21%.

And the only way this happened was because of photosynthesis.

 

Going to the moon could be considered a waste of money as well. What makes that more worthwhile?

 

Really.. Mars will never ever ever be colonized.

For a number of reasons first mars cant sustain life. Second no one wasd ever on the moon all fake. 3rd We would somehow need an unlimited supply of air if we where to live on mars and since we cant do that well that sucks.

 

1. Under artificial conditions, it can.
2. The moon landing was not fake, and there was no second gun man on the grassy knoll.
3. We could bring plants, or maybe develop artificial photosynthesis.

Why doesn't he try it out for himself, and go there and see if there really is oxygen.
